Due to the differences in circadian rhythms between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, some cheetahs developed thick winter coats during the Indian summer and monsoon last year, anticipating the African winter (June to September).
The landslide occurred at the NHPC’s 510 MW Teesta-V hydropower station site in Dipudara, near Singtam town in the Gangtok district. The site had already been affected by a glacial lake outburst flood in October 2023.

The weather department predicted heavy rainfall (7 cm to 11 cm in 24 hours) to very heavy rainfall (12 cm to 20 cm in 24 hours) in one or two places in Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Kannur on Aug 14, and in Kozhikode and Wayanad on Aug 15.
The rainfall, which reached 140 mm in just one day, is described as a “once in a 50-year event” for Wayanad, marking it as the third highest single-day rainfall on record for the area.
A specialized operation is planned for the remote area between Soochippara and Pothukallu, with a 12-member team from the Army and forest department being deployed via helicopter in two groups.
Bhupender Yadav alleged that the Kerala government sanctioned numerous developments in Wayanad over the past four years, including non-coal mining projects, without conducting a comprehensive study of the district's topography and geomorphology.
