Major restructuring of the party was done following its third consecutive assembly election defeat since the 2024 Lok Sabha polls saw new general secretaries for Punjab and J&K and fresh in-charges for nine states.
The AAP secured only 22 seats, with top leaders like Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia suffering defeats. The Congress drew a blank in the national capital for the third time in a row.
On Feb 8, Singh convened a meeting with BJP-led ruling alliance MLAs at the CM Secretariat. The meeting was held in the wake of the opposition Congress seeking to move a no-confidence motion against the government led by Singh during the Assembly session starting Feb 10.
The BJP returned to power in Delhi after more than 26 years, winning 48 of the 70 assembly seats. The AAP won 22 seats while the Congress drew a blank in the polls held on Feb 5.
BJP’s Pravesh Verma has emerged as a key contender for Delhi’s chief ministerial post as he defeated Arvind Kejriwal by 4,089. Other frontrunners include Ashish Sood, who won from Janakpuri, Pawan Sharma, who secured Uttam Nagar with a 29,740-vote margin, with former Delhi BJP presidents Vijender Gupta and Satish Upadhyay also being in the race.
In a video message, AAP supremo said “his party accepts people’s mandate with humility” and that the party will “play the role of a constructive opposition.”
Trends and results on the Election Commission website showed the BJP ahead in 48 seats and the AAP in 22.
