The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registered a sweeping victory in the Gujarat local body elections, winning all 15 municipal corporations in the state and reinforcing its dominance in urban governance.
The results, declared on April 28 after counting of votes, showed the BJP crossing the 50% vote share mark in every municipal corporation — a key indicator of its consolidated support base across cities.

The elections covered 15 municipal corporations along with municipalities and panchayat bodies, making it one of the largest local electoral exercises in the state.
The outcome is being seen as a major setback for opposition parties, particularly the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which had sought to expand its presence in Gujarat but failed to register a significant breakthrough.
In Surat — previously considered one of AAP’s stronger urban bases — the party was unable to hold ground as the BJP tightened its grip over the municipal corporation. The results underline the ruling party’s continued strength in key urban centres.
Congress also struggled to mount an effective challenge, trailing significantly behind the BJP across most civic bodies.
Across the 15 municipal corporations, which together account for over 1,000 seats, the BJP secured a dominant share, while Congress and other parties were left with a limited presence.
Beyond urban centres, the BJP also performed strongly in municipalities and panchayat elections, indicating its organisational reach across rural and semi-urban areas.
The results are significant as they reflect voter sentiment in the state ahead of future electoral contests, including the next assembly elections.
With this victory, the BJP has further consolidated its position in Gujarat, maintaining its long-standing dominance in the state’s political landscape.
