Counting of votes for the 2026 Assembly elections across five states has revealed sharply contrasting political trends, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) making strong gains in West Bengal and Assam, while regional dynamics dominate Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
BJP gains momentum in Bengal and Assam

In West Bengal, early trends show the BJP opening a significant lead over the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), marking a major shift in the state’s political landscape. Reports indicate the BJP leading in over 100 seats, with the TMC trailing behind in comparison.
In Assam, the BJP has also maintained a strong position, with trends suggesting it is on course for another term in power.
Together, these trends point to a consolidation of BJP’s presence in eastern and northeastern India.
Kerala tilts towards UDF
In Kerala, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) has taken an early lead over the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF). Initial counting trends show UDF crossing the majority mark in the 140-member Assembly, indicating a possible change in government.
The shift, if sustained, would mark a significant political turnaround in a state known for alternating power between the two alliances.
TVK disrupts Tamil Nadu politics
Tamil Nadu has emerged as the biggest surprise of the election cycle. Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has surged ahead in early trends, leading in over 100 constituencies and challenging the long-standing dominance of the Dravidian parties.
The state, historically dominated by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the AIADMK, appears to be witnessing a major political shift, with TVK emerging as a strong contender for power.
With counting still underway in several constituencies, final results may shift the margins but are unlikely to overturn the broad trends emerging across states.
