William Stevenson arrested in Delaware following weeks-long investigation into December death.

William Stevenson, the former husband of ex-US first lady Jill Biden, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of his wife, Linda Stevenson, officials said.
Stevenson, 77, was taken into custody on February 2 after a weeks-long investigation into the death of his 64-year-old wife, who was found unresponsive at the couple’s home in Wilmington, Delaware, on December 28, 2025.

Police said officers were responding to a domestic dispute call when they discovered Linda Stevenson lying unresponsive in the living room. Immediate life-saving measures were administered, but she was later pronounced dead.
Following what authorities described as an extensive investigation, Stevenson was formally charged with murder in the first degree.
William Stevenson was previously married to Jill Tracy Jacobs—now Jill Biden—from February 1970 to May 1975. The two married when Jill was 18 and a student at the University of Delaware, while Stevenson was 23. The marriage ended in divorce in 1975, after which Jill married Joe Biden, then a US senator from Delaware.
