BCCI has finally announced India’s team for the T20 World Cup, with Virat Kohli making the cut. The 15-member squad, captained by Rohit Sharma, sees the return of Yuzvendra Chahal and a first-time World Cup selection for Shivam Dube. Wicketkeeping duties will be shared by Sanju Samson and Rishabh Pant, while Hardik Pandya is set to serve as vice-captain. The spin attack, led by Chahal, will be strengthened by the inclusion of Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, and Ravindra Jadeja.

In addition, Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Siraj will support India’s pace attack, spearheaded by Jasprit Bumrah. The BCCI has also named four reserve players - Shubman Gill, Rinku Singh, Avesh Khan, and Khaleel Ahmed - who will accompany the squad. The first group of players is scheduled to depart for the USA on May 21.

The selection of the final 15 for the ICC T20 World Cup in June has been a topic of intense discussion since the beginning of the year, with the ongoing 2024 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) providing numerous potential candidates. The selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, will need to resolve several selection dilemmas before finalizing their 15 and making the official announcement.

Certain players are already expected to be included, such as captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, and Rishabh Pant. Hardik Pandya was also expected to be part of the group before the start of IPL 2024, but concerns about his bowling fitness have raised doubts among the selectors. However, due to the lack of a suitable replacement, he is likely to be included. Questions about Ravindra Jadeja’s batting performance and his suitability for the No. 7 spot will need to be addressed by head coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma.

Key decisions will revolve around defining Virat Kohli’s role in the batting lineup, with some veteran cricketers and experts suggesting that the former India captain should open alongside Rohit Sharma, following his impressive performance in IPL 2024 where he scored 500 runs for a record-equalling seventh time. Other considerations include whether to include Shubman Gill as an extra batter, after the Gujarat Titans captain fell behind in the race against Jaiswal, and whether to choose Sanju Samson or KL Rahul as the backup wicketkeeper. The final discussions will focus on the bowling unit, specifically the selection of Jasprit Bumrah’s pace-bowling partner and the choice of an additional spinner in the lineup.
