Indian Railways door-to-door parcel delivery service through Rail Parcel App

Indian Railways plans doorstep parcel pickup and delivery in eight cities through its upcoming Rail Parcel App.

Sending parcels through Indian Railways could soon become easier as the national transporter prepares to introduce a door-to-door parcel delivery service in eight major cities. The proposed service, called ‘Rail Parcel App – Ghar Se Ghar Tak’, will allow customers to book shipments online, arrange doorstep pickup and have parcels delivered directly to recipients.

Under the new arrangement, private logistics companies will manage parcel collection and final delivery, while Indian Railways will handle transportation between railway stations. The initiative aims to reduce the need for customers to visit railway parcel offices and complete physical paperwork.

According to the Railway Board's Freight Marketing Circular No. 27 of 2026, dated October 26, the application is being developed for Android, iOS and web platforms. However, the Railways has not announced a confirmed public launch date. The service will become operational after the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) completes the required testing.

Indian Railways Door-to-Door Parcel Service: Which 8 Cities Are Included?

The service will initially cover eight cities:

  • Delhi
  • Mumbai
  • Kolkata
  • Chennai
  • Ahmedabad
  • Hyderabad
  • Bengaluru
  • Pune

The Railways plans to expand the platform across the country in the future. However, no nationwide expansion schedule has been announced so far.

How Will the Rail Parcel App Work?

The proposed system will connect customers, logistics companies and Indian Railways through a single digital platform.

The process will have three stages:

1. Doorstep pickup: A selected logistics service provider will collect the parcel from the sender's home or business address and transport it to the originating railway station.

2. Railway transportation: Indian Railways will carry the parcel between the originating and destination stations.

3. Final delivery: After the parcel reaches its destination, a logistics partner will collect it from the railway station and deliver it to the recipient's address.

Customers can choose doorstep pickup, doorstep delivery or both. Those selecting both services will have to use the same logistics partner for the two stages. The app is also expected to provide parcel tracking, automatic notifications, digital invoices and optional services such as packaging and storage.

How to Book Parcels Through the Rail Parcel App

Once the platform becomes operational, customers will be able to book shipments through the app or website.

The expected booking process is:

  • Register using a valid mobile number.
  • Select an available logistics service provider.
  • Enter the sender's and recipient's details.
  • Provide parcel information, including weight, dimensions and contents.
  • Select the pickup and delivery options.
  • Choose an available pickup slot.
  • Make the payment digitally.

After payment verification and acceptance of the parcel by railway staff, the system will generate a digital Parcel Railway Receipt (PRR). Customers will be able to use the digital shipment details to track their consignments.

Advance Booking Rules and Parcel Handover Timings

The Railway Board has proposed the following booking schedule:

  • Advance booking: Up to 15 days before the train's scheduled departure.
  • Last booking date: At least one day before departure.
  • Parcel handover: The logistics partner must hand over the shipment to railway staff between 12 hours and one hour before the train departs.
  • Pickup slots: Available timings will be displayed on the app.

All bookings will depend on the availability of space on the selected train.

Indian Railways Parcel Charges: How Much Will Customers Pay?

The Railways has not announced a fixed price for the new service. The final amount will depend on the parcel's weight, dimensions, transportation distance and train category.

The total payment may include:

  • Railway transportation charges.
  • Doorstep pickup fees.
  • Final delivery charges.
  • Packaging or storage fees, if selected.
  • Applicable additional transportation charges.

The app will display railway freight and logistics service charges separately, although customers will be able to pay the total amount in a single digital transaction. Payment options are expected to include UPI, debit cards, credit cards, net banking and other approved digital methods. Indian Railways and the logistics partner will issue separate GST invoices for their respective services. Customers may also opt for insurance or declare the value of their parcels under applicable railway rules. This facility will cover the railway transportation portion of the journey.

Cancellation and Refund Rules Explained

The refund amount will depend on when the customer cancels the booking.

Cancellation before pickup: Customers cancelling before the logistics partner collects the parcel will receive a refund of the railway freight after a deduction of ₹10 as clerkage charges. Refunds for doorstep pickup and delivery will depend on the logistics partner's own policy.

Cancellation after pickup: Once the logistics partner has collected the parcel, cancellation is not permitted under the stated rules. No refund will be applicable.

Cancellation after PRR generation: Cancellation is generally not permitted after the Parcel Railway Receipt is generated. Exceptions may be considered in cases involving technical problems, operational errors or other justified circumstances approved by the competent authority. A ₹10 clerkage charge and applicable wharfage charges may apply.

Wharfage refers to the charge imposed when a parcel remains at a railway facility beyond the permitted free storage period.

Parcel Tracking, Delivery and Packaging Rules

Customers will receive notifications when their parcels are accepted, loaded onto a train and reach the destination station. OTP verification will be used during collection and delivery. Those who do not select doorstep delivery will have to collect their parcels within the prescribed free period to avoid additional charges.

Customers must ensure that parcels are properly packed and that their contents and declared value are accurate. Explosive, flammable, hazardous and illegal goods, along with other prohibited items, will not be accepted. Certain goods may require special packaging under railway rules.

Despite the announcement, the new eight-city service is not yet open for general bookings. The Railway Board has stated that the implementation date will be communicated to zonal railways after CRIS completes the required testing. The initiative follows an earlier app-based parcel pilot introduced through South Central Railway in February 2026. A Ministry of Railways update published by the Press Information Bureau in March reported that the pilot covered 17 stations across seven cities and involved private logistics partners.

The upcoming eight-city rollout is a separate expansion under the Railway Board's October 2026 policy guidelines. The proposed service could provide a convenient alternative for individuals, small businesses and online sellers who regularly send goods between cities. However, its success will depend on the final delivery charges, service availability, parcel handling and reliability of logistics partners.
