Education authorities suspend Hato Pāora College hostel’s licence, ruling that keeping it open is contrary to boarders’ interests.

A boys’ boarding hostel at Hato Pāora College in New Zealand’s Manawatū region has been ordered to close after education authorities suspended its licence, citing concerns serious enough to conclude that remaining open would not serve students’ interests.
The suspension took effect at 5pm on Friday, following an inspection by the Education Review Office (ERO) on Wednesday and Thursday. The decision affects the hostel at the state-integrated Catholic Māori boys’ school near Feilding, which has an enrolment of more than 100 students. Confirming the closure, the ERO said its decision was based on information gathered while carrying out its statutory responsibilities for regulating school hostels. "The decision to suspend the Hato Pāora College hostel licence is on the basis that it is contrary to the boarders' interests for the hostel to remain open," the agency said.

The ERO said its regulatory role includes ensuring the safety and wellbeing of students living in school hostels, including exercising its authority to suspend operating licences when necessary. While the agency has not publicly detailed the specific concerns that prompted the latest decision, the suspension follows an inspection conducted over two days this week.
The development marks a significant shift from the findings of an earlier ERO review in March 2025, which had painted a largely positive picture of the hostel's management and student support systems. That assessment described a clear management structure, established operational procedures and regular monitoring of boarders' wellbeing. It also noted that the hostel manager met staff at the end of every shift to discuss issues affecting students, while the principal and hostel manager maintained close coordination to support both educational and personal wellbeing outcomes.
Boarders interviewed during the earlier review described hostel staff as caring and supportive, while families reported good communication between parents, caregivers, the hostel and the school. "Boarding life supports students' learning," the March 2025 report stated. The earlier review had also indicated that improvements to the hostel facilities were expected to be carried out in 2025.
However, the latest inspection appears to have raised concerns that led regulators to take the exceptional step of suspending the hostel's licence. The decision leaves questions about the immediate arrangements for students who depend on the hostel for accommodation and support, as well as the circumstances that prompted the regulatory intervention.
