The MCC's final counselling round offers eligible NEET UG candidates another chance at vacant medical seats. Here are the eligibility rules, deadlines, allotment process and admission requirements.

NEET UG 2026 stray vacancy round eligibility, MCC registration deadlines and medical college counselling process
The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has opened the final stage of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2026 counselling process, giving eligible candidates another opportunity to secure admission to medical and dental colleges where seats remain vacant after the earlier rounds.
Known as the NEET UG stray vacancy round, this stage is intended to fill unoccupied seats in MBBS, BDS and participating B.Sc. Nursing programmes. Unlike the initial counselling rounds, the stray vacancy round comes with stricter eligibility conditions, fresh registration requirements and consequences for candidates who fail to join an allotted institution.

According to the MCC's official counselling schedule issued on September 14, registration for the 2026 stray vacancy round was scheduled from October 12 to 14, while choice filling runs until October 15. The seat allotment result is scheduled for October 17, followed by reporting to allotted colleges between October 19 and 26.
However, an update on the MCC's undergraduate counselling portal states that registration would become available on October 13. Candidates should therefore rely on the live registration portal and the latest MCC notices for operational updates.
The counselling process is conducted online through mcc.nic.in, with seats allotted according to NEET UG merit, the choices submitted by candidates, seat availability and applicable reservation rules.
What is the NEET UG stray vacancy round?
The stray vacancy round is the fourth stage of the MCC's NEET UG counselling process, conducted after Round 1, Round 2 and Round 3. Its purpose is to allot seats that remain vacant after the earlier rounds have concluded.
Vacancies can arise for several reasons, including candidates not joining allotted colleges, admission cancellations or seats remaining unfilled during previous allotment rounds.
Under the counselling framework approved by the Supreme Court, MCC conducts four rounds of All India Quota counselling. The committee also conducts the online stray vacancy round for participating deemed universities.
The MCC handles 15% All India Quota seats in government medical and dental colleges, seats under its jurisdiction in central universities and institutions, and seats in AIIMS and JIPMER. It also handles designated ESIC seats and participating B.Sc. Nursing programmes. Its role for the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune, is limited to registration and the prescribed counselling arrangements.
The remaining state-quota seats are generally handled by the respective state counselling authorities. Their stray vacancy schedules and eligibility requirements may differ from those of MCC.
Unlike earlier counselling rounds, the stray vacancy stage is not designed to provide candidates with another opportunity to upgrade an existing seat. It primarily offers eligible candidates who do not hold an allotted or joined seat an opportunity to secure admission against available vacancies.
Who is eligible for the NEET UG 2026 stray vacancy round?
Eligibility for the stray vacancy round is determined by more than a candidate's NEET UG score. Applicants must have qualified NEET UG 2026, meet the applicable admission requirements and satisfy the MCC's conditions relating to previous seat allotments and participation in counselling.
According to the revised MCC Information Bulletin for 2026, candidates who were not allotted a seat in earlier rounds may participate, provided they complete the fresh registration and choice-filling process for the stray vacancy round.
For instance, a candidate who registered for Round 3 but was not allotted a seat can participate in the stray vacancy round. Candidates who did not secure admission in earlier rounds may also be considered if they meet the prescribed requirements.
However, the MCC has specifically excluded certain categories of candidates.
These include candidates who have not registered for the stray vacancy round, those already holding or having joined a seat, and candidates who were allotted a seat in MCC Round 3 but did not report to their assigned institution.
Another important restriction concerns the exchange of counselling data between the Centre and states.
Following Round 3, MCC shares candidate information with state counselling authorities to prevent candidates from participating in the All India Stray Vacancy Round while holding or having been allotted seats elsewhere. Candidates appearing in the relevant central or state allotment lists are excluded under the prescribed rules.
This means that qualifying NEET UG or remaining without admission does not automatically guarantee eligibility. Candidates must check whether their previous allotment status permits participation before registering.
The distinction is particularly important for students simultaneously following All India Quota and state counselling processes, where seat allotments may affect eligibility across the two systems.
NEET UG 2026 stray vacancy round: Important dates
The MCC's published schedule for the online stray vacancy round is as follows:

The committee has also directed participating institutions to treat Saturdays, Sundays and gazetted holidays as working days to ensure the counselling process is completed within the prescribed timeframe.
How does the NEET UG 2026 stray vacancy counselling process work?
The counselling process begins with online registration through the official MCC website. Eligible candidates must access the undergraduate counselling portal, complete the required registration formalities and pay the applicable fees.
Fresh registration and fresh choice filling are required for the stray vacancy round, even though a candidate may have participated in earlier stages.
After successful registration and payment, candidates must select their preferred courses and institutions from the available choices.
This stage requires careful consideration because seat allotment depends partly on the order in which candidates list their preferences. MCC processes allotments using NEET UG merit, applicable reservation provisions, candidate choices and the available seat matrix.
Candidates should therefore examine the colleges and courses before locking their choices. Institutional fees, service bonds, location, eligibility conditions and other admission requirements can vary.
The MCC's information bulletin advises applicants to review the details supplied by participating institutions rather than relying on third-party websites for information about college fees, service obligations and other admission conditions.
Once the choice-filling period closes, MCC processes seat allotments and publishes the results on its official portal.
Candidates who receive a seat must download their allotment letter and report to the designated institution within the prescribed period. The admission process is completed only after the institution verifies the candidate's eligibility and original documents and fulfils the necessary admission formalities.
Merely receiving an allotment does not remove the requirement to report to the institution.
What are the registration fees and security deposits?
The MCC's revised 2026 information bulletin specifies different registration fees and refundable security deposits according to the category of institution selected.
For 15% All India Quota seats and other specified government or central institution seats, the non-refundable registration fee is Rs 1,000 for unreserved and EWS candidates, along with a refundable security deposit of Rs 10,000.
For SC, ST, OBC and PwD candidates under the applicable fee category, the registration fee is Rs 500 and the security deposit is Rs 5,000.
Candidates opting for deemed universities are required to pay a non-refundable registration fee of Rs 5,000 and a security deposit of Rs 2 lakh. Those selecting both government institutions and deemed universities pay the higher applicable fee, rather than two separate sets of fees.
The security deposit is refundable under the MCC's rules, but it may be forfeited if a candidate is allotted a seat and fails to join or if admission is cancelled for reasons specified in the counselling bulletin.
Candidates should confirm the amount displayed in their registration account, particularly if they have previously participated in counselling or paid a security deposit.
What happens if a candidate is allotted a seat but does not join?
The stray vacancy round carries stricter consequences for non-reporting because it is conducted at the final stage of the regular MCC counselling process.
According to the MCC's 2026 rules, candidates allotted seats during the stray vacancy round are required to join their respective colleges. Those who fail to report or join will lose their security deposits and become ineligible for further counselling rounds, if any are conducted.
The restriction is intended to discourage candidates from accepting allotments they do not intend to use, which could leave medical seats vacant near the end of the admission process.
The MCC also states that candidates cannot resign from seats after joining in Round 3 under the prescribed counselling scheme.
Students should therefore avoid listing institutions they would be unwilling or unable to join. The cost of a college, any service bond, accommodation requirements and the availability of documents should be assessed before submitting preferences.
For the 2026 stray vacancy round, successful candidates are scheduled to report between October 19 and October 26.
Which documents are required at the time of admission?
Candidates allotted seats must report with their original documents and the required photocopies for verification.
The MCC's information bulletin identifies the allotment letter, NEET UG admit card, result or rank letter, Class 10 and Class 12 certificates, Class 12 marksheet, proof of date of birth where necessary, valid identity proof and eight passport-size photographs among the required documents.
Candidates seeking admission under reserved categories must also produce valid category certificates in the prescribed format. Additional documents are necessary for applicants claiming eligibility under PwD, NRI or other specified categories.
Institutions may require further documents under their admission rules. The MCC has made it clear that candidates who fail to produce the necessary original documents will not be permitted to complete admission.
Applicants are advised to contact their allotted colleges soon after the results are announced. The MCC notes that admission formalities at some institutions can take two to three days and that the prescribed joining deadline cannot be extended by the committee.
What should candidates know before participating?
One of the most important distinctions is that MCC counselling and state counselling are separate processes. While MCC manages the All India Quota and specified institutions, state authorities conduct admissions for seats under their respective jurisdictions.
Eligibility for an MCC stray vacancy round should not be confused with eligibility for a state-level stray vacancy round. State authorities may announce separate schedules, vacancy lists and reporting instructions.
Candidates must also understand that the stray vacancy round does not guarantee admission. A seat is allotted only when an eligible candidate meets the applicable merit and category requirements and a suitable vacancy is available among the choices submitted.
A candidate who remains unallotted after earlier rounds may still face competition for the limited seats available in the final stage.
The number and distribution of vacancies can change during counselling. Applicants should consult the official seat matrix rather than assume that seats reported vacant earlier will remain available.
For candidates who have not secured admission despite qualifying NEET UG 2026, the stray vacancy round provides a further opportunity. However, that opportunity is subject to strict eligibility checks and deadlines, making accurate registration details and informed college preferences essential.
The latest counselling bulletin, official schedule, seat matrix and allotment results are available through the Medical Counselling Committee website.
