Rain confined to Western Ghats as hot, dry weather grips Tamil Nadu

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate rainfall over the Western Ghats districts of Tamil Nadu until Thursday (July 16), while most other parts of the state are expected to experience predominantly dry weather over the coming days.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), a trough extending along the Tamil Nadu coast is influencing weather conditions across the state. Under its impact, isolated places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are likely to receive light rainfall on Sunday.

The Western Ghats districts are expected to witness moderate rainfall until Thursday, providing relief to the hill regions even as much of the state remains largely dry. From Monday onwards, dry weather is likely to prevail across most districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

Meteorologists said there are no indications of widespread rainfall over the plains during the current forecast period, with only isolated areas expected to receive brief spells of rain.

Even as scattered showers are forecast for a few locations, the weather department has warned that daytime temperatures are likely to rise. Maximum temperatures across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry could increase by up to 3 degrees Celsius above normal over the next few days, resulting in hotter weather conditions across several parts of the state.

In Chennai, the sky is expected to remain partly cloudy on Sunday. The weather department has ruled out the possibility of rainfall in the city during the day.

The maximum temperature is likely to reach around 38 degrees Celsius, making conditions warm and humid.

Residents have been advised to avoid prolonged exposure to the afternoon sun and remain adequately hydrated as temperatures continue to climb.

Meanwhile, the IMD has issued a caution for fishermen operating in the Arabian Sea.

Strong winds with speeds of up to 55 kmph are expected over parts of the central-east Arabian Sea until Wednesday. Fishermen have been advised to exercise caution while venturing into the sea due to rough weather and gusty wind conditions.

The latest forecast reflects the prevailing southwest monsoon pattern over Tamil Nadu, with rainfall activity expected to remain concentrated along the Western Ghats while much of the rest of the state experiences dry weather.

The weather department said it will continue to monitor atmospheric conditions and issue further advisories if there are any significant changes in the forecast.
