The National Testing Agency (NTA) has extended the registration deadline for the University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (UGC NET) December 2026 session to October 31. Candidates who have not completed their applications can now submit their forms and pay the examination fee by 11:50 pm on the revised deadline without paying a late fee.
The extension was announced through a public notice dated October 27, 2026, giving applicants additional time to complete the registration process. Candidates can apply through the official UGC NET website, ugcnet.nta.nic.in.

The examination dates have also been revised. According to the updated schedule, UGC NET December 2026 will be conducted on December 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 and 21. Candidates should check the official website for the subject-wise examination schedule and subsequent announcements.
Candidates preparing for the examination should keep the following dates in mind:
| Event | Date |
|---|---|
| Application deadline | October 31, 2026 |
| Last date for examination fee payment | October 31, 2026, by 11:50 pm |
| Application correction window | November 2–4, 2026 |
| Examination city intimation slip | From November 23, 2026 |
| Admit card availability | From December 7, 2026 |
| UGC NET December 2026 examination | December 14–18 and December 21, 2026 |
Candidates should verify the schedule through the official UGC NET website before making examination-related decisions.
The NTA has extended the application deadline to give candidates who have not completed their registration additional time to submit their forms.
Under the revised schedule, both application submission and examination fee payment must be completed by October 31 at 11:50 pm. Candidates do not need to pay a late fee if they complete these steps within the extended deadline.
The extension does not automatically change the other examination rules. According to the NTA's announcement, the remaining terms and conditions specified in the information bulletin and earlier notices continue to apply.
Candidates should avoid waiting until the final hours to complete registration, as technical problems or payment failures could affect successful submission.
The University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test is a national-level examination conducted by the NTA to determine candidates' eligibility for academic and research opportunities in Indian universities and colleges.
UGC NET results are used to determine eligibility for the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), appointment as an Assistant Professor, and PhD admission under the applicable categories and regulations.
The qualification category matters because eligibility for JRF and Assistant Professor positions is not identical for every successful candidate. Applicants seeking admission to doctoral programmes should also check the requirements of their chosen university.
For candidates planning an academic or research career, the examination provides an important route to higher education and teaching opportunities. However, qualifying UGC NET does not automatically guarantee a job, a fellowship award in every category, or admission to a particular PhD programme.
Eligible candidates can complete the UGC NET application process online by following these steps:
Candidates should retain the confirmation page and payment record for future reference. They should also check that the payment has been processed successfully rather than assuming that entering payment details completes the application.
The official information bulletin should be treated as the final reference for eligibility, document specifications and application requirements.
Candidates should keep the following instructions in mind before submitting their applications:
Candidates should not assume that errors can be corrected after submission. The correction window, where applicable, is governed by the NTA's instructions and may permit changes only in specified fields.
Candidates should consult the updated information bulletin for the identity-verification options available during registration.
Where Aadhaar-based verification is offered, applicants should follow the prescribed procedure and ensure that their details are accurate. Candidates should not assume that using Aadhaar removes every verification requirement or guarantees an issue-free examination process.
The registration instructions should also be checked for the availability and procedure of Meri Pehchaan, the Government of India's single sign-on service. Applicants should use only the authentication methods listed on the official portal and follow the instructions applicable to their circumstances.
With the registration deadline extended to October 31, candidates who have not applied should complete the process as early as possible.
Applicants should first read the updated information bulletin to confirm eligibility, subject selection and document requirements. They should keep the necessary documents ready, use a valid email address and mobile number, and verify all entries before submitting the form.
Candidates who have already submitted their applications should check the official schedule for the correction window and review which details, if any, can be modified.
The examination city intimation slip and admit card are expected to become available according to the published schedule. Candidates should monitor the official website for updates rather than relying exclusively on third-party reports.
The revised deadline gives applicants additional time to complete registration, but it does not remove the need to meet eligibility conditions or follow the examination rules.
