The revised structure will apply to students currently in Class 9 during 2026–27. It provides vocational learning options and a possible alternative for students struggling with core subjects.

Who will be affected by the new CBSE exam structure?

The changes announced by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) are specifically intended for students studying in Class 9 during the 2026–27 academic session. These students will appear for their Class 10 board examinations in 2028.

The revised structure will not apply to students appearing for the Class 10 board examinations in 2027 or the current Class 10 batch.

Under the revised arrangement, students will have five compulsory subjects for the Class 10 board examination:

Language 1

Language 2

Mathematics

Science

Social Science

However, the curriculum will include nine compulsory curricular areas. These will also cover a third language, art education, physical education and well-being, and vocational education.

How can the optional skill subject help students pass?

One of the important features of the revised examination structure is the provision for an additional skill subject.

Students who choose one of the 22 skill subjects notified by CBSE will have to appear for its Class 10 board examination. If a student fails in Mathematics, Science or Social Science but passes the skill subject, the skill subject may be used to replace the failed subject while calculating the board examination result.

This provision offers students an additional opportunity to fulfil the passing requirements.

The replacement mechanism is consistent with the existing CBSE curriculum provisions, which allow a passed sixth skill subject to replace a failed subject among Mathematics, Science and Social Science, subject to the prescribed conditions.

What are the two vocational education options?

CBSE has outlined two pathways for students to complete the vocational education requirement.

Option 1: Choose one of the 22 skill subjects

Students opting for a notified skill subject will have to appear for the corresponding Class 10 board examination. Their marks and grades will be mentioned on the CBSE marksheet.

Students who successfully clear the examination will also receive a certificate under the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF).

Some of the skill subjects include:

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Data Science

Information Technology (IT)

Introduction to Financial Markets

Healthcare

Design Thinking

Option 2: Choose Kaushal Vikas

Students can alternatively select the Kaushal Vikas vocational education programme. This option will be assessed internally by their schools.

Students securing at least 33% marks in the school-based assessment will receive a school-level certificate. They will not have to appear for a separate CBSE board examination in this subject.

Which subjects have been excluded from the 2028 curriculum?

CBSE has also clarified certain changes concerning the implementation of its revised curriculum.

For students in the 2026–27 Class 9 batch and the corresponding 2027–28 Class 10 batch, the following proposed components will not be included in the Scheme of Studies:

Individuals in Society

Computational Thinking (CT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) modules in Class 9

Environmental Education in Class 10

The changes are intended to align the curriculum with the board's implementation schedule.

What should students know about the CBSE Class 10 Exam 2028?

The revised framework distinguishes between compulsory board examination subjects and compulsory curricular areas. Although students will appear for board examinations in five core subjects, vocational education will remain part of their compulsory curriculum.

The additional skill subject option is particularly significant because it can provide an alternative route for students who fail Mathematics, Science or Social Science, subject to CBSE's replacement rules.

Students and schools should follow the detailed CBSE notifications and curriculum guidelines for the 2026–27 and 2027–28 academic sessions before making subject-selection decisions.
