Program objectives

The MBA in Family Business is structured to prepare participants to manage, transform and expand their family enterprises across generations. It aims to provide advanced management knowledge tailored to family-run organizations while helping participants preserve business legacies and respond to changing market conditions.

The program also focuses on succession planning, leadership transitions, professional management practices and effective corporate governance. Participants are expected to develop the skills needed to manage family-business relationships, address conflicts and establish structures that support business continuity.

Other objectives include encouraging innovation and entrepreneurial thinking within family firms, combining global perspectives with local business realities, and promoting sustainable, ethical and socially responsible business practices. The curriculum also seeks to support participants' personal development and leadership identity.

A key feature is its focus on actionable outcomes rather than conventional placement-driven MBA goals. Graduates are expected to apply their learning to existing family businesses or new ventures, with an emphasis on strategic decision-making and long-term enterprise development.

What will students learn?

The program aims to develop entrepreneurial thinking, strategic leadership and the ability to drive innovation across family businesses and new ventures. Its learning outcomes differ from those of a conventional MBA because the primary focus is on strengthening family enterprises rather than preparing students for placement-based employment.

The major learning outcomes and graduation attributes include:

  • Comprehensive business knowledge.
  • Strategic leadership in family businesses.
  • Professionalization of business operations and governance.
  • Succession and continuity planning.
  • Conflict management.
  • Innovation and entrepreneurial competence.
  • A global outlook with local relevance.
  • Effective communication and collaboration.

The program's main practical outcome is a five- to 10-year Business Transformation and Growth Plan for each participant's family enterprise. The plan is intended to help participants translate classroom learning into strategic initiatives for their own companies.

Family-business labs, practical projects and incubation support

The curriculum incorporates family-business labs, practical projects and a capstone assignment focused on developing a five- to 10-year business transformation and growth strategy. These components are intended to help participants apply management concepts to the operational and strategic needs of their own enterprises.

The program is also designed to draw on the IIM Lucknow Enterprise Incubation Centre (IIML-EIC) ecosystem. Its areas of engagement include entrepreneurship, innovation, incubation, startup ecosystem participation and interaction with practitioners.

This ecosystem is expected to complement the institute's academic and management expertise by exposing participants to a wider entrepreneurial network. The broader objective is to support innovation and business development within family enterprises.

Program format and campus schedule

The MBA in Family Business will follow an on-campus modular format at IIM Lucknow's Noida campus. Participants will be required to attend campus once a month for seven days.

Audit courses, including family-business labs and other workshops, will also take place on selected weekends. The format is designed to accommodate participants who are actively involved in running or managing their family businesses.

The program is nonresidential. Hostel and mess charges are not included in the tuition fee. Campus accommodation may be provided on request, depending on availability and on a case-by-case basis, with payment required at the prevailing rates.
