Indian Railways is preparing to expand its premium overnight train services with a new Vande Bharat Sleeper Express connecting Varanasi and New Delhi. The Railway Board has approved the proposed service, which is expected to improve rail connectivity between the national capital and eastern Uttar Pradesh.
The new train is expected to offer a faster overnight journey between the two cities. The service is planned to pass through Prayagraj and Kanpur, providing an additional travel option for passengers along the route.

Reports published in recent days indicate that the train could be inaugurated on October 31, 2026. However, passengers should check official railway announcements for confirmation of the launch programme, final timetable, ticket availability and operating arrangements.
The proposed Vande Bharat Sleeper Express is designed for overnight journeys, combining sleeping accommodation with the modern features associated with the Vande Bharat train series.
Unlike the existing daytime Vande Bharat services, the sleeper version is intended to make longer journeys more convenient by allowing passengers to travel overnight and reach their destination the following morning.
The proposed service will connect Varanasi, an important religious and cultural centre, with New Delhi, a major administrative, commercial and transport hub.
The train is expected to benefit pilgrims travelling to Varanasi, tourists visiting destinations in Uttar Pradesh, students, working professionals and passengers travelling between the national capital and nearby cities.
The proposed service will operate between Varanasi and New Delhi, passing through important railway stations in Uttar Pradesh.
The reported route includes:
Varanasi: The proposed originating or terminating station in eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Prayagraj Junction: An important connection for passengers travelling to and from Prayagraj.
Kanpur Central: A major railway junction serving Kanpur and surrounding areas.
New Delhi: The proposed terminus in the national capital.
Some reports have also mentioned Aligarh and Ghaziabad in connection with the service's proposed stopping pattern. However, the final list of operational halts should be confirmed against the official timetable before publication or travel planning.
The route is expected to strengthen connectivity between eastern Uttar Pradesh, central Uttar Pradesh and the national capital, particularly for passengers seeking overnight travel.
The proposed Varanasi–New Delhi service is expected to cover the journey overnight, with departure from Varanasi in the evening and arrival in Delhi the following morning.
Recent reports have cited a journey time of approximately 9 to 9.5 hours, potentially making the service faster than some existing overnight options on the route.
However, published reports differ on the precise arrival time in New Delhi. The timings and intermediate stoppages should therefore be treated as provisional until confirmed by Indian Railways.
Passengers planning a journey should check the official railway reservation system for the final departure and arrival times, operating days and seat availability once bookings open.
The introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express is expected to offer several benefits to passengers travelling between Varanasi and New Delhi.
1. More convenient overnight travel
Sleeping accommodation will allow passengers to rest during the journey instead of travelling exclusively in daytime seating arrangements.
2. Improved connectivity for pilgrims and tourists
Varanasi attracts visitors for its religious, cultural and heritage destinations. A dedicated overnight service could make travel more convenient for people visiting the city from Delhi and other parts of northern India.
3. Better access for students and working professionals
Passengers travelling for education, employment, business or official work may benefit from an additional overnight option between the two cities.
4. A faster alternative to some existing services
The proposed journey time could reduce the time required to travel between Varanasi and New Delhi compared with certain existing train services. The actual time saving will depend on the final timetable and the service used for comparison.
The Vande Bharat Sleeper train series has been developed for long-distance overnight travel, with features intended to improve passenger comfort and safety.
According to information published by the Ministry of Railways about the Vande Bharat Sleeper design, the train series includes air-conditioned sleeper accommodation, automatic doors, modern passenger facilities and the Kavach train-protection system.
The first Vande Bharat Sleeper service was planned for the Guwahati–Howrah route. The proposed Varanasi–New Delhi service would expand this category of overnight trains to another busy corridor.
However, passengers should verify the final coach composition, accommodation categories, onboard catering arrangements and other facilities specific to the Varanasi–New Delhi service before booking.
The final fare for the Varanasi–New Delhi Vande Bharat Sleeper service should be checked through official railway booking channels.
Some media reports have discussed estimated fares based on distance and travel class, but estimates should not be treated as confirmed ticket prices. The final fare may vary by accommodation category and applicable railway charges.
Passengers should consult the official reservation system once bookings become available rather than relying on unofficial fare estimates.
The Railway Board's approval is an important step towards introducing the Varanasi–New Delhi Vande Bharat Sleeper service. The next details passengers need are the confirmed launch arrangements, train numbers, operating days, final stoppages, fare structure and reservation dates.
Until these are confirmed through official railway channels, the reported timetable and launch date should be treated as proposed arrangements.
If introduced as planned, the service would provide another overnight rail connection between the national capital and Varanasi, expanding travel options for passengers moving between Delhi and eastern Uttar Pradesh.
