Jio Valuation Raises Questions Over Ambani Family’s Net Worth

The listing of Jio Platforms at a market capitalisation of Rs 12.53 lakh crore has drawn attention to the value of the holdings of its promoters, the Mukesh Ambani family. The combined notional value of their direct and indirect stakes across Reliance Industries (RIL), Jio Platforms and Jio Financial Services is estimated at Rs 12.80 lakh crore, compared with Rs 8.73 lakh crore before the listing.

However, market analysts have cautioned that this figure should not be treated as a direct increase in the family’s wealth, as some of Jio Platforms’ value is already reflected in RIL’s market valuation.

RIL has a market capitalisation of approximately Rs 16 lakh crore, while the promoter group holds a 50.44% stake in the company, valued at around Rs 8.07 lakh crore. RIL, in turn, owns 64.41% of Jio Platforms. Based on these figures, the Ambani family’s indirect economic interest in Jio Platforms is estimated at approximately Rs 4.07 lakh crore, equivalent to an indirect stake of about 32.50%.

The promoter companies also hold a 48% stake in Jio Financial Services, whose market capitalisation stands at Rs 1.37 lakh crore. Their holding is valued at approximately Rs 65,760 crore.

Listing Offers Transparency, but Wealth Estimates Depend on Market Movements

Analysts have warned against adding the estimated Rs 4.07 lakh crore indirect interest in Jio Platforms to the full value of the family’s RIL stake. Since RIL owns Jio Platforms, part of Jio’s valuation is already incorporated into RIL’s market price. Counting it separately could therefore inflate estimates of the family’s total wealth.

The listing provides investors with a standalone market valuation of Jio Platforms, making it easier to assess the business independently and compare it with other major companies. However, its impact on RIL’s valuation will depend on investor expectations regarding Jio’s growth, RIL’s other businesses, and the company’s assets and liabilities.

Analysts also outlined a hypothetical scenario in which a 5-8% increase in RIL’s market capitalisation could raise the value of the promoter group’s stake by approximately Rs 40,352 crore to Rs 64,563 crore, assuming ownership remains unchanged.

The actual change in the Ambani family’s notional wealth will ultimately depend on movements in the share prices of RIL and Jio Financial Services, along with the valuation of its other investments and liabilities. The listing improves transparency but does not automatically create additional wealth.
