The incident took place during a combat maneuver in the Vosges region near the town of Colombey-les-Belles, according to the French Defense Ministry’s statement.
Over 100 Hindus and other minority members have been killed in a spate of attacks across the country since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government. Also, there have been at least 205 incidents of attacks involving arson and wanton loot and torching of shops and homes of Hindus in 52 districts during the period, according to media reports.
Over 230 people were killed in Bangladesh in the incidents of violence that erupted across the country following the fall of the Hasina government on Aug 5, taking the death toll to 560 during the three weeks of violence which originated from a students' movement against a controversial quota system in jobs.
Bangladesh is currently led by an interim government under Nobel Peace Prize-winning economist Muhammad Yunus. The interim government's key advisor has recently remarked that Sheikh Hasina's extended stay in India will not hurt bilateral relations and Dhaka will always try to maintain good relations with New Delhi.
The case is the first to be filed against Hasina after she resigned and fled to India following widespread protests against her government over a controversial job quota system. The case was filed by a well-wisher of the grocery store owner Abu Sayed, who was killed on July 19 in police firing during a procession in support of the quota reform movement in Mohammadpur.
The incident comes two weeks after the fatal stabbing of three young girls in Southport, north-west England, at a children’s holiday dance workshop. The 17-year-old male suspect in the case remains in custody until his next court appearance at the end of October.
