Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Oct 1 released a specially designed commemorative coin and postage stamp to mark the 100th anniversary of the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS). He said the gesture honors the RSS’s contributions to the nation and its century-long journey of ideology, service, and discipline.
At the ceremony, PM Modi noted that several RSS leaders, including founder KB Hedgewar, were imprisoned during India’s freedom struggle. He claimed the RSS had “immensely suffered at the hands of the British and Nizams” for upholding a “nation first” principle.
An important feature of the new coin is that it is the first in Indian history to carry the image of Bharat Mata (Mother India). The coin also bears the RSS motto: “Rashtray Swaha, Idam Rashtraya, Idam Na Mama” (Everything is dedicated to the nation, Everything is the nation’s, Nothing is mine).
Modi observed that the RSS was founded on Dussehra 100 years ago, and he connected this to symbolism: “The establishment of RSS on Dussehra 100 years ago was not just a coincidence. This was resurrection of a tradition which was continuing since thousands of years.”
Speaking at the event, he praised the RSS’s central role in nation-building, emphasizing its disciplined activism, organisational strength, and contributions to social and educational outreach efforts.
The coin and stamp issuance came during the centenary function held in Delhi, which was attended by senior RSS leaders, dignitaries, and members of the public.
As part of the centenary celebrations, the RSS is reflecting on its history and projecting its vision for the future.
