St. George’s University School of Medicine and Northumbria University medical education partnership for the January 2027 intake.

St. George’s University (SGU) School of Medicine has announced its January 2027 intake, giving eligible students another opportunity to begin their medical education through its partnership with Northumbria University in Newcastle, United Kingdom.

The five-year Doctor of Medicine (MD) track is designed for students whose academic backgrounds meet the programme's entry requirements. The January intake provides an alternative to the traditional autumn start, allowing prospective medical students to plan their studies around academic schedules, travel and visa arrangements.

According to SGU, the partnership with Northumbria University enables students to complete part of their medical education in the UK before progressing through the remaining stages of the programme. The university partnership offers several medical education pathways, including four-year, five-year and six-year options.

SGU January 2027 Intake: What Students Should Know

The January intake may be particularly relevant to students completing international qualifications, including A-levels and the International Baccalaureate, who want an alternative start date for their medical studies.

Kevin Romao, Regional Director of International Student Recruitment for Asia at SGU, said the new intake responds to demand for greater flexibility in medical education.

The university said the additional entry option would allow eligible applicants to plan their transition to higher education more conveniently, including making arrangements for accommodation, travel and immigration documentation.

Students should review the programme's admission requirements before applying, as eligibility depends on their academic qualifications and the university's assessment.

SGU Medical Scholarships: Financial Support for Eligible Students

SGU offers a range of scholarships for medical students, with eligibility and award amounts depending on the programme and the applicant's academic record, achievements and other qualifying criteria.

The university's official scholarship information lists academic merit awards and scholarships recognising community service, research contributions, healthcare experience and other achievements.

SGU also advertises a US$65,000 New Year, New Career Scholarship for eligible students entering its four-year MD programme in January 2027. The published terms specify that this particular award is available to eligible US and Canadian applicants, so students from India should not assume they qualify.

A separate US$50,000 50th Anniversary Scholarship is advertised for eligible applicants to the four-year MD or MDReady programme, subject to the published application and admission conditions.

Students interested in the five-year MD track should contact SGU directly to confirm which scholarships apply to their specific pathway, whether awards are available to international applicants and what conditions must be met.

Medical Education Through the SGU–Northumbria University Partnership

The partnership between SGU and Northumbria University allows students to undertake part of their medical education in Newcastle, UK, before progressing through the remaining stages of their medical training.

Depending on the programme and academic progression, students may have opportunities to study in the UK and Grenada. SGU awards the MD degree upon successful completion of the relevant programme requirements.

The university also provides clinical training opportunities through its network of affiliated hospitals and healthcare systems in the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada. SGU's official website currently describes a network of more than 85 affiliated hospitals and health systems.

These international clinical placements are intended to expose students to different healthcare environments and help prepare them for further postgraduate training. Actual placement options depend on programme requirements, eligibility and applicable visa or regulatory conditions.

SGU Marks 50 Years of Medical Education

Founded in 1976, St. George's University is celebrating its 50th anniversary across 2026 and 2027. The institution says its School of Medicine has produced more than 25,000 graduates, with alumni working in the United States and other countries.

SGU also highlights its international student community, with students and faculty representing more than 150 countries.

The university's medical programmes are accredited by the Grenada Medical and Dental Council, which is recognised by the World Federation for Medical Education, according to SGU. However, students planning to practise medicine in India should independently verify the applicable recognition, registration and licensing requirements with the relevant Indian authorities before enrolling.
