NCR braces for three more days of rain as IMD issues yellow alert

Residents of the national capital region woke up to pleasant weather on Friday as cool winds and light rainfall brought relief from the humid conditions that had prevailed earlier in the week. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued wet weather over the next three days and issued a yellow alert, warning of moderate to heavy rainfall in parts of the city.

According to the IMD, rainfall activity is expected to persist across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), with light showers likely over the weekend. The weather department has also indicated a low to moderate risk of flash flooding in a few watersheds and low-lying neighbourhoods during the next 24 hours.

The alert comes a day after widespread rainfall lashed Delhi and surrounding areas, leading to waterlogging and traffic disruptions at several locations. Continuous showers on Thursday brought a significant drop in daytime temperatures, making it one of the coolest days of the season so far.

Data from the IMD showed that Delhi’s maximum temperature settled at 27.6 degrees Celsius on Thursday, 6.6 degrees below the previous day’s 32.6 degrees Celsius and well below the normal maximum of 34.2 degrees Celsius for this time of year. The minimum temperature was recorded at 25.6 degrees Celsius, leaving a narrow difference of just 2 degrees Celsius between the day’s maximum and minimum temperatures.

Heavy rainfall began early on Thursday, prompting the IMD to issue an orange alert. Among the city’s monitoring stations, Lodhi Road recorded the highest rainfall at 60.4 mm, followed by Safdarjung at 56 mm and Delhi Ridge at 54.4 mm. The IMD classifies rainfall between 15.6 mm and 64.4 mm as moderate rainfall.

The showers caused waterlogging in several areas across the capital. The Public Works Department (PWD) received multiple complaints from locations including Press Enclave Marg, Defence Colony, Kanjhawala and Palla. Water accumulation was also reported from parts of Karkardooma, Saraswati Vihar in Pitampura, and several stretches in Dwarka, affecting movement in some areas.

Gurugram Police on Thursday morning had also issued a cautionary advisory urging corporate offices and private establishments to allow employees to ‘work from home’ to reduce traffic volume on the roads and facilitate smoother movement of emergency services.
