IIT Kanpur Director Professor Manindra Agrawal and BIT Mesra Vice-Chancellor Professor Indranil Manna formally signed the agreement, establishing a framework for academic and research cooperation between the institutions.

Speaking about the collaboration, Manna said, “Through this partnership, we aim to create new opportunities for our students and faculty to engage in advanced research, benefit from specialized academic expertise and work on challenges that have national relevance.”

He emphasized that strong educational institutions, capable researchers and a skilled workforce would play a central role in helping India achieve its Viksit Bharat @2047 vision.

“By bringing together the academic strengths and research capabilities of both institutions, we aim to contribute to the national goal through joint research, technology development and the preparation of graduates equipped to address the country's emerging scientific and technological needs,” Manna said.

Five areas of academic collaboration

The agreement identifies five major areas of cooperation between IIT Kanpur and BIT Mesra. These include undergraduate and postgraduate research, student exchanges and internships, joint supervision of Master's and PhD students, academic programs, and training opportunities for institutional staff and officers.

According to the statement cited by PTI, faculty members from both institutions will jointly supervise undergraduate research projects beginning in the third year of study. Postgraduate students will receive similar research guidance from their first semester.

The partnership will also allow students to participate in summer and winter internships at either institution. They will have opportunities to attend short-term academic courses, workshops and other learning programs designed to provide exposure to specialized areas of research and academic expertise.

Through these initiatives, the institutions intend to encourage students to work on research projects under the guidance of faculty members from both campuses. The collaboration is also expected to facilitate the sharing of academic knowledge and research experience across different disciplines.

Shared laboratories, faculty exchanges and staff training

Access to research infrastructure and specialized laboratory facilities is another component of the agreement. Both institutions will facilitate the sharing of research resources to support collaborative academic activities and scientific investigations.

The framework also includes faculty exchange initiatives, professional development programs, and short-term training opportunities for staff members and officers. These activities are intended to promote knowledge sharing, strengthen institutional capabilities and provide exposure to different academic and research environments.

BIT Mesra students will be able to participate in joint research projects with IIT Kanpur and visit its specialized laboratories. The agreement also provides opportunities for student exchange programs and internships, subject to the terms and conditions governing individual activities.

The collaboration is expected to give students access to research infrastructure and specialized expertise beyond their home institution. Faculty members and researchers from both campuses will also be able to work together on academic projects and explore areas of mutual research interest.

The agreement will remain in effect for five years, providing a framework for sustained academic engagement between IIT Kanpur and BIT Mesra.

By combining their academic expertise, research infrastructure and institutional capabilities, the two institutions aim to expand opportunities for collaborative research, student training, faculty development and knowledge exchange.

The partnership also seeks to prepare graduates with the scientific and technological skills required to address emerging national challenges and contribute to India's long-term development goals.
