The recipients were recognized for developing innovative empirical research methods and analytical techniques that deepen understanding of regional and global educational trends, practices and challenges.

Five education researchers from the United States, Canada, Brazil and China have received the Global Award for Innovation in Education Research Methods for their contributions to developing and applying research methodologies in the field of education.
The awards were presented at the 12th Forum on Empirical Education Research, recently held in Shanghai. The recognition honors researchers whose methodological innovations and analytical approaches have helped advance empirical research and improve the understanding of educational developments across different regions.

According to China Daily, the Global Award for Innovation in Education Research Methods is the world's first award of its kind. The Faculty of Education at East China Normal University initiated the recognition and launched it in 2024.
Supported by the Tin Ka Ping Foundation, the award seeks to promote the internationalization of Chinese educational research while encouraging innovation in global education studies.
It also aims to strengthen academic cooperation and create opportunities for researchers from different countries to exchange knowledge and methodological expertise.
This year's recipients include Ellen B Goldring from the United States, Krista R Muis from Canada, Simon Schwartzman from Brazil, Gu Lingyuan from Shanghai and Leslie Lo Nai-kwai from Hong Kong.
Researchers recognized for contributions to education research methods
Yuan Zhenguo, chair of the awards committee and tenured professor at East China Normal University, said the five recipients had made outstanding contributions to research methodology and its application across various fields of educational research.
He highlighted their work in developing creative approaches to empirical research and applying analytical techniques to examine educational issues.
Their contributions have established a strong methodological foundation for contemporary education research, while helping researchers gain a deeper understanding of educational phenomena at both regional and global levels.
The recognition also reflects the growing importance of empirical research methods in examining education systems, practices and developments. By advancing research tools and analytical approaches, the award seeks to encourage more rigorous and innovative investigations into educational challenges.
Award promotes international academic exchanges
Over the years, the Global Award for Innovation in Education Research Methods has developed into a platform for academic exchange and dialogue among education researchers from different parts of the world.
It brings together scholars working within varied institutional traditions and social environments, allowing research methodologies developed in different contexts to be shared, examined and further refined.
The exchange also creates opportunities for researchers to challenge established approaches and draw inspiration from one another's work.
The initiative aims to encourage greater interaction between international research communities and strengthen the exchange of methodological knowledge across geographical and institutional boundaries.
Focus on global education research and governance
Looking ahead, the award is expected to expand its role in bringing together academic expertise from different countries and regions.
Its future objectives include strengthening cross-regional exchanges on research methodologies and encouraging greater international participation in education studies.
The initiative also seeks to contribute Chinese academic perspectives and expertise to discussions on global education governance.
Through continued collaboration and the exchange of research approaches, it aims to support the development of a more robust and inclusive framework for addressing educational issues worldwide.
By recognizing methodological innovation and promoting international academic dialogue, the award intends to strengthen the contribution of education research to understanding regional and global developments and shaping future education policies and practices.
