India’s semiconductor demand could nearly double to $90 billion by 2029-30 from around $44 billion in 2025-26, according to a report by KPMG in India, India Deep Tech Alliance and Nishith Desai Associates. Mobile and wearables are expected to remain the largest demand segment, while India also has opportunities in chip design, advanced packaging, equipment, materials and semiconductor R&D.

India’s semiconductor demand could roughly double to about $90 billion by 2029-30 from roughly $44 billion in 2025-26 as the country leverages policy support, growing domestic demand and engineering talent to build a globally competitive ecosystem, a report said on Friday. Mobile and wearables are projected to constitute the largest segment, with estimated demand of approximately $42.13 billion by 2029-30, the joint report from KPMG in India, India Deep Tech Alliance (IDTA) and Nishith Desai Associates (NDA) said.
India's semiconductor ambitions extend beyond fabrication and are pursued through a focused strategy aligned with its demand profile and existing strengths. "Building a globally competitive industry will require capabilities across semiconductor design, manufacturing, advanced packaging, equipment and materials, research and development, talent, supply chains and the commercialisation of new technologies," the report noted.

The report also mapped India's semiconductor patent landscape over the decade to June 2026, recording approximately 78,000 published patent applications and approximately 28,000 grants during the period. Within the technology categories, semiconductor accelerators accounted for roughly 92 per cent of filings. Patents in advanced packaging, high-bandwidth memory and chiplets, all supply-constrained globally, remain comparatively thin in India's portfolio.
Packaging filings are spread across bonding, interconnect, interposer and thermal and power technologies, an area where India can build capability without the capital intensity of leading-edge wafer fabrication. “India's semiconductor opportunity is no longer simply about whether the country can participate in the global semiconductor industry; it is about how rapidly and how deeply we can build capabilities that are globally competitive," said Arun Kumar, Executive Committee's Chair, India Deep Tech Alliance. Akhilesh Tuteja, Partner and National Leader - Clients and Markets, KPMG in India, said that semiconductors are no longer just an enabler of digital transformation but they have become a cornerstone of technological sovereignty, economic resilience and national competitiveness.
