The 1994-batch AGMUT cadre IPS officer brings nearly 32 years of policing, intelligence, and security experience after serving in key roles at the Intelligence Bureau, succeeding Satish Golcha.

Former Special Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) Anurag Kumar has been appointed as the new Commissioner of Delhi Police, according to a government notification issued on Friday.
A 1994-batch IPS officer of the AGMUT cadre, Kumar succeeds Satish Golcha, a 1992-batch officer, who had assumed charge as Delhi Police Commissioner in August last year.

Although Golcha's tenure was scheduled to continue until April 2027, the government has directed him to report to the Delhi LG office.
Kumar's appointment follows his repatriation from the Intelligence Bureau to his parent AGMUT cadre by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Thursday.
"With the approval of the Competent Authority, Anurag Kumar, IPS (AGMUT:1994), is hereby appointed as Commissioner of Police, Delhi, with effect from the date of assumption of charge and until further orders," an official order stated.
With nearly 32 years of experience in policing, administration and intelligence operations, Kumar brings extensive expertise in internal security and law enforcement to one of the country's most challenging policing assignments.
During his tenure in the Intelligence Bureau, India's premier domestic intelligence agency, he handled several critical portfolios related to national security, counter-terrorism strategy, intelligence gathering and analysis, and other sensitive security matters.
An engineering graduate, Kumar has been recognised for his distinguished service with some of the highest honours in policing.
He was awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2010 and later received the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2016 for his exceptional contributions to the force.
As the head of the Delhi Police, Kumar will be tasked with overseeing security and law-and-order management in the national capital, which houses the country's key constitutional and administrative institutions, including Parliament, Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Prime Minister's Office, the Supreme Court and numerous foreign embassies.
The Delhi Police is regarded as one of India's most strategically important police forces due to the sensitive nature of the national capital and the constant security demands associated with it. Kumar's extensive intelligence and security background is expected to play a crucial role in addressing these challenges and further strengthening the capital's policing framework.
