The operation involved an Indian Navy warship, maritime surveillance aircraft, Marine Commandos and an Indian Air Force C-17 aircraft. The rescue comes amid renewed concerns over Somali piracy and threats to commercial shipping routes.

Indian Navy rescues 20 crew members from hijacked Iranian vessel off Somalia.
The Indian Navy has successfully rescued 20 crew members from an Iranian fishing vessel hijacked by armed Somali pirates off the northeastern coast of Somalia. The operation, which lasted more than 48 hours, concluded on November 2, 2026, with all crew members released safely and no casualties or injuries reported.
The vessel, identified as Azini, was hijacked on October 29. According to the Ministry of Defence, the incident posed a wider maritime security threat as pirates could potentially use the fishing vessel as a 'mother ship' to launch attacks against commercial shipping in the region. The successful rescue was confirmed by the Ministry of Defence through a Press Information Bureau (PIB) release on November 3.

How Did the Indian Navy Rescue the Hijacked Vessel?
The rescue operation involved coordinated efforts by the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force. The Navy deployed a mission-positioned warship supported by a maritime reconnaissance aircraft to locate and monitor the hijacked vessel. After tracking its movements through sustained surveillance, the forces used what the Navy described as calibrated non-kinetic measures to restrict the vessel's movement and prevent its escape.
Marine Commandos, also known as MARCOS, were deployed through a precision airdrop involving an Indian Air Force C-17 aircraft. The commandos subsequently carried out a tactical intervention, secured the vessel and overcame the pirate threat. According to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, the operation took place more than 3,000 kilometers from Mumbai. He congratulated the Navy and the Air Force, highlighting their coordination and ability to respond to maritime threats far from India's coastline.
Why Was the Hijacked Vessel a Threat to International Shipping?
The hijacking raised concerns that pirates could turn Azini into a 'mother ship'. In maritime piracy, a mother ship is a larger vessel used as a floating base to support smaller boats involved in attacks against commercial ships.
Using such vessels, pirate groups can operate farther from the coastline and approach busy shipping routes. The Maritime Security Centre Indian Ocean had warned that the hijacked fishing vessel could be used to support further attacks against merchant shipping.
Somali Piracy Raises Fresh Maritime Security Concerns
The rescue comes at a time when piracy off Somalia is drawing renewed international attention. After years of reduced attacks following international naval patrols and improved maritime security measures, recent hijackings have raised concerns about the return of piracy in the western Indian Ocean.
An Associated Press report published before the rescue highlighted a series of vessel hijackings since April 2026, including attacks on commercial shipping. These incidents have added to existing concerns over the safety of important maritime trade routes.
Iran Thanks India for the Rescue Operation
The operation also carried diplomatic significance. Iran's Embassy in New Delhi thanked the Indian government, Navy and Air Force for rescuing the 20 Iranian crew members.
The embassy described the operation as an example of cooperation and solidarity between the two countries. The successful rescue highlights India's expanding role in maritime security across the Indian Ocean Region. Beyond bringing the crew members to safety, the operation has drawn attention to the continuing threat of piracy and the importance of protecting international shipping routes.
