From admission requirements and university rankings to scholarships, living expenses, medical degree recognition and employment rules, here is what Indian students need to know before studying in China.

Representational Image
For Indian students considering higher education abroad, China presents a complicated choice. The country has universities ranked among the world's leading institutions, offers Government-funded Scholarships and provides academic opportunities in engineering, medicine, science, technology and international business. Yet the decision involves questions that university rankings and admission brochures rarely settle: how much will a degree actually cost, will it be recognized in India, and what employment opportunities will be available after graduation?
These concerns have become particularly relevant for students preparing for the 2027 academic intake. China has introduced a standardised assessment for undergraduate applicants at universities participating in its government scholarship programme. Meanwhile, revised Chinese visa procedures for applicants in India took effect on October 26, 2026.

For those considering a bachelor's degree, Master's Programme, MBA, PhD or MBBS in China, understanding these requirements is essential before paying application fees or accepting an offer.
China's higher education system includes several internationally ranked research universities. Peking University and Tsinghua University are among the country's highest-ranked institutions, while Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Zhejiang University feature prominently in global rankings.
China offers opportunities across Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Engineering, Biotechnology, Environmental Science, Economics, Medicine and other disciplines. Students interested in research can explore specialised laboratories, Postgraduate programmes and university-funded research opportunities.
Cost is another consideration. Published tuition fees at some Chinese public universities are lower than those charged by many universities in major Western study destinations. However, the difference depends on the institution, degree, city and programme. Internationally oriented degrees and specialised professional courses can be substantially more expensive.
China also offers opportunities to learn Mandarin, an advantage for students pursuing careers involving Chinese businesses, manufacturing, supply chains or international trade.
But academic reputation alone should not determine the choice. Students need to examine the actual teaching language, curriculum, faculty, research facilities, accreditation, internship arrangements and graduate outcomes of their chosen programme.
China has several universities offering Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Research programmes to international applicants. Their suitability depends on the subject and the availability of courses taught in English or Chinese.
The following institutions are among the highest-ranked mainland Chinese universities in the QS World University Rankings 2027.
| University | City | QS world rank 2027 | Academic areas to explore |
| Peking University | Beijing | 13 | Natural sciences, economics, humanities, social sciences |
| Tsinghua University | Beijing | 14 | Engineering, computer science, technology, management |
| Fudan University | Shanghai | 26 | Medicine, science, economics, humanities |
| Shanghai Jiao Tong University | Shanghai | 36 | Engineering, technology, biomedical sciences |
| Zhejiang University | Hangzhou | 47 | Engineering, computer science, agriculture, research |
| Nanjing University | Nanjing | 90 | Physics, chemistry, earth sciences, humanities |
| University of Science and Technology of China | Hefei | 134 | Physics, mathematics, computing, advanced sciences |
| Tongji University | Shanghai | 146 | Civil engineering, architecture, urban planning |
| Wuhan University | Wuhan | 165 | Geospatial sciences, engineering, law, research |
| Harbin Institute of Technology | Harbin | 190 | Engineering, aerospace and technology |
QS World University Rankings 2027. Rankings refer to the institutions overall, not the quality or availability of individual international programmes.
Students looking for the best universities in China for engineering, computer science, business or medicine should compare departmental strengths and specific degree requirements rather than relying only on overall world rankings.
An important distinction concerns Hong Kong. Universities in Hong Kong operate under different admission, immigration and fee arrangements. This guide focuses on mainland China.
Engineering, computer science and artificial intelligence
Engineering and Technology programmes are available at universities such as Tsinghua, Shanghai Jiao Tong, Zhejiang, Tongji and Harbin Institute of Technology.
Students can explore mechanical engineering, electronics, electrical engineering, data science, artificial intelligence, robotics, materials science and related disciplines.
Research-oriented master's and doctoral applicants should examine the university's laboratories, publications, supervisors and funded research projects before applying.
MBBS and clinical medicine
China offers undergraduate clinical medicine programmes that attract foreign students, including applicants from India. However, medical education requires additional scrutiny because a degree awarded abroad does not automatically confer the right to practise medicine in India.
Students should verify the university's authority to enroll international students, the course duration, language of instruction, clinical training and internship arrangements, as well as the applicable National Medical Commission regulations.
Business, management and economics
Chinese universities offer programmes in business administration, international business, finance, economics and management. Some graduate programmes are taught in English.
Indian applicants considering an MBA in China should compare the curriculum, employment outcomes, work experience requirements and language expectations with those of other international MBA programmes.
Medical research, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals
Biotechnology, biomedical engineering, life sciences and pharmaceutical research programmes are available at several Chinese institutions.
These qualifications should not be confused with degrees that independently permit clinical medical practice. Professional licensing requirements differ across disciplines and countries.
Mandarin and Chinese language courses
Students interested in language learning can apply for short-term, yearlong or degree-level Chinese language programmes.
Mandarin proficiency can support careers in translation, international relations, business and other sectors involving Chinese-language communication. Language certification alone, however, does not guarantee employment.
Admission criteria depend on the university, programme and academic level. Applicants must generally meet the following qualifications:
| Programme | General academic requirement | Typical duration |
| Bachelor's degree | Class 12 or equivalent school qualification | 4–5 years |
| Master's degree | Recognised bachelor's degree | 2–3 years |
| PhD | Master's degree or another qualification accepted by the university | Generally 3–4 years, depending on programme |
| Chinese language course | Usually secondary school qualification, depending on programme | Varies |
| Clinical medicine | University-specific academic eligibility and medical regulatory conditions | Depends on the programme and required training |
Indian students completing Class 12 through CBSE, CISCE or recognised state boards can explore undergraduate admissions, subject to the Chinese institution's academic eligibility requirements. Universities may assess marks, subject combinations, entrance examinations, language proficiency, interviews and other evidence of academic ability. There is no single minimum Class 12 percentage or IELTS score that applies to every Chinese university.
Not always. Chinese-taught programmes usually require proof of Mandarin proficiency through the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi, or an accepted equivalent. English-taught programmes may require IELTS, TOEFL or other evidence of English proficiency. Some institutions accept previous English-medium education certificates or provide alternative assessments.
What is the CSCA exam for studying in China?
One of the important changes for undergraduate applicants is the introduction of the China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA). According to official guidance published by the Shanghai government, applicants to undergraduate programmes at universities participating in the Chinese Government Scholarship system must submit CSCA scores for the 2026 and 2027 academic years.
The examination assesses academic readiness through subjects including mathematics, physics, chemistry and professional Chinese.
Applicants should visit csca.cn and check their university's subject requirements, examination dates and score submission deadlines.
The China university admission process for Indian students generally begins through the university's official international admissions website. While requirements differ, the process typically involves six stages.
Step 1: Select the university and course
Identify universities offering the desired qualification. Confirm whether the course is taught in English or Mandarin, and whether international students are eligible to apply. Check tuition fees, course duration, application deadlines and any professional recognition requirements.
Step 2: Review the eligibility criteria
Read the university's current international admission notice. Check academic prerequisites, CSCA or other entrance examinations, HSK requirements and accepted English proficiency tests. For research degrees, identify potential supervisors and determine whether the department requires prior supervisor approval.
Step 3: Prepare the application documents
Commonly required documents include:
Step 4: Submit the university application
Create an account on the institution's official application portal, upload the requested documents and pay any prescribed application fee.
Step 5: Complete interviews or entrance assessments
Depending on the programme, shortlisted candidates may have to attend an interview, take an examination or provide further academic documents.
Step 6: Obtain the admission and visa documents
Successful applicants receive admission instructions and the relevant documentation needed for their Chinese student visa application. Long-term students ordinarily require an admission notice and a JW201 or JW202 study document, as specified by the relevant visa authorities.
Students should verify these documents directly with the university before proceeding with travel arrangements.
There is no single application deadline for all Chinese universities. Some postgraduate institutions have already opened their 2027 admission cycle. Other institutions may open admissions later or operate different deadlines for their programmes.
Students seeking scholarships should begin checking university notices several months before their intended enrolment date, as scholarship deadlines can be earlier than general admission deadlines.
Tuition fees vary substantially by university, course, teaching language and qualification. Published university admission guides provide more reliable budgeting information than general claims about the average cost of studying in China.
Accommodation, food, transportation and other living costs depend heavily on location and lifestyle. Communication University of China in Beijing estimates approximately RMB 4,000–6,000 per month for living costs including accommodation, food and transportation.
Students should obtain a breakdown of:
Campus dormitories may be cheaper than private accommodation, but availability and room-sharing arrangements differ between universities. Families should also prepare for unexpected medical costs, exchange-rate fluctuations and travel to India during vacations or emergencies.
Scholarships can substantially reduce the cost of higher education in China, but their availability depends on eligibility, institutional nomination, academic performance and the relevant year's funding arrangements.
Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC Scholarship)
The Chinese Government Scholarship, administered through the China Scholarship Council, is among the main funding programmes available to international applicants.
According to the official scholarship guidance published by the Shanghai government, the standard full scholarship provides a tuition waiver, university accommodation or an accommodation subsidy, comprehensive medical insurance and a monthly stipend.
| Scholarship category | Monthly stipend |
| Undergraduate students | RMB 2,500 |
| Master's students and general scholars | RMB 3,000 |
| Doctoral students and senior scholars | RMB 3,500 |
The published stipend amounts do not mean every successful applicant will receive identical funding across all schemes. Applicants must confirm the coverage of the specific award offered
The principal scholarship application routes include the Bilateral Programme (Type A), which operates through designated authorities, and the University Programme (Type B), which involves participating Chinese institutions.
Indian applicants should check which routes are accepting applications from them in the relevant admission cycle.
The official information website is Campus China, while scholarship applications can be accessed through the Chinese Government Scholarship Information System.
