Beyond borders: University of Johannesburg brings Chinese and African universities together to advance research

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) hosted the inaugural Jiangsu-Africa University Cooperation Alliance Summit on Oct 23, bringing together a higher education partnership initiative aimed at strengthening academic collaboration between China and African countries.

Held at the UJ Arts Centre on the university’s Auckland Park Kingsway Campus, the summit focused on advancing cooperation in research, teaching, learning and innovation.

The event reflected nearly a decade of efforts to deepen ties between UJ and China through various Sino-African partnerships. The university has emphasized the importance of sustained international collaboration in building long-term academic relationships and supporting the future development of higher education.

In October 2025, UJ co-initiated the Jiangsu-Africa University Cooperation Alliance alongside Nanjing Tech University. The alliance brings together 13 universities from Jiangsu Province in China and 23 institutions from 13 African countries, establishing a platform for high-level dialogue, research collaboration and innovation.

The 2026 summit represented an opportunity to advance the alliance’s objectives beyond institutional agreements and commitments. It aimed to open up opportunities for students, researchers, industry representatives and civil society across Africa, encouraging broader participation in academic cooperation and knowledge exchange.

The alliance seeks to draw on the combined expertise and resources of participating institutions to address shared global challenges. Climate change and public health were among the areas identified for collaboration, alongside efforts to expand cultural exchange and strengthen mutual understanding between China and African countries.

The summit was held under the theme, “Sino-Africa Higher Education Partnerships for the Future: Jointly Advancing Research, Teaching, Learning and Innovation.” The theme underscored the role of international university partnerships in strengthening academic cooperation, supporting joint research and promoting innovation.

Through the alliance, participating institutions have a platform to develop stronger academic connections and explore opportunities for collaboration across teaching, research and innovation.

The initiative also aims to connect universities with industry and civil society, broadening the potential benefits of Sino-African higher education partnerships beyond academic institutions.

The summit formed part of the wider effort to strengthen cooperation between Chinese and African universities, with an emphasis on building lasting partnerships that support research, knowledge sharing and responses to common development challenges.
