The challenge organised by Vodacom, the University of Johannesburg and Amazon Web Services attracted more than 150 student sign-ups, with participants exploring applications in healthcare, education, agriculture and public safety.

Students in South Africa are being given opportunities to apply artificial intelligence (AI) to real-world problems through a hackathon organised by telecommunications company Vodacom, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and Amazon Web Services (AWS).
The AI for Africa Hackathon Challenge took place at Vodacom World in Johannesburg and attracted more than 150 student sign-ups, according to a report published by TechTrendsKE on Oct 13.

The event brought undergraduate and postgraduate students together to develop AI-based solutions addressing challenges including maternal health, education, gender-based violence, youth unemployment, agriculture, water security and community safety.
The hackathon is part of a wider partnership announced in July 2026 to strengthen AI and data science skills by connecting university education with industry needs.
Students explore AI beyond coding
The challenge encouraged participants to consider how AI-powered applications could address practical problems, alongside technical aspects such as software development, business models and the potential impact of their solutions.
Students described the event as an opportunity to understand how classroom learning could be applied to practical projects. First-year students from UJ also highlighted the value of gaining experience with application development and presenting their technical skills.
The report did not specify how many teams participated or announce winners or completed solutions.
Partnership links university research with industry
The hackathon builds on a broader collaboration between Vodacom and UJ, with AWS providing cloud infrastructure, computing resources and AI and data technologies to support student and research projects.
The partnership includes short-term learning programmes, postgraduate diplomas and master’s and PhD research streams. It also involves industry mentorship and work on projects connected to business needs.
Research already underway includes the development of autonomous AI systems designed to detect, analyse and respond to cyber threats across telecommunications networks. Another area of investigation explores blockchain-based approaches to digital identity management and preventing identity theft.
By combining academic research with industry resources, the partners aim to give students practical experience in developing AI solutions and strengthen the pipeline of professionals equipped for careers in AI and data science.
