Five students from Maharashtra’s Hiradpada Gagangiri Ashram School reportedly left their hostel to attend a Navratri fair before a motorcycle crash claimed two lives and injured three others.

Two students died and three others were injured after a motorcycle carrying five students from the Hiradpada Gagangiri Ashram School crashed in Maharashtra’s Palghar district. The accident occurred in the early hours of October 19, 2026, as the students were returning to their school hostel after attending a Navratri celebration in Sarsun village.
According to police, the students had reportedly left the hostel without permission and were travelling on a single motorcycle. The vehicle skidded and fell into a roadside pit at Kongdi Ghat in Jawhar taluka between approximately 2:30 am and 3 am.

The deceased students were identified as Sumit Motiram Bhingal, 18, a Class 12 student, and Pritam Ganesh Potinda, 15, who studied in Class 9.
A passing motorist alerted the police following the crash. The injured students were initially taken to Patangshah Cottage Hospital in Jawhar, where one student was declared dead on arrival or at the hospital, according to reports. The other student subsequently died during treatment.
The three injured students were transferred to a district hospital in Nashik for further medical care. Reports published on October 20 said their condition was stable and improving, although they had initially sustained serious injuries.
The incident raised serious concerns about student safety and hostel supervision. Following the accident, the school’s headmaster, hostel warden and watchman were suspended over alleged dereliction of duty.
An inquiry by the Integrated Tribal Development Project (ITDP) reportedly identified security shortcomings at the institution. According to officials cited in media reports, non-residential students had been allowed to enter the hostel, while CCTV cameras were not functioning despite earlier warnings.
ITDP Project Officer and Assistant Collector Siddharth Ramkumar reportedly issued show-cause notices to the school management and other personnel concerned after the incident.
The findings have prompted questions about how the students were able to leave the hostel at night without being detected and whether adequate safety measures were in place.
The tragedy has renewed attention on the responsibility of residential schools to maintain effective supervision, restrict unauthorised movement and ensure that security systems remain operational.
A local organisation has reportedly demanded criminal proceedings against the school management and staff. However, such demands should not be treated as proof of criminal liability. Any further legal action will depend on the findings of the investigation and the decisions of the competent authorities.
The incident underscores the need for stronger hostel security, functioning surveillance systems and effective monitoring to help prevent similar tragedies.
