District administrations have announced a school holiday for October 21 in Chennai and four neighbouring districts as persistent rainfall and weather warnings raise safety concerns.

Schools in five districts of Tamil Nadu will remain closed on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, following heavy rainfall and forecasts of further showers. The affected districts are Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu and Ranipet.
The holiday announcements were issued by the respective district administrations in view of the prevailing weather conditions. Students and parents have been advised to follow communications from their schools and district authorities for any further updates.

The following districts have announced school closures for October 21:
Chennai: Schools will remain closed following heavy overnight rainfall and forecasts of continued showers.
Tiruvallur: The district administration has declared a holiday for schools amid persistent rain.
Kancheepuram: Schools have been closed as a precautionary measure due to the weather conditions.
Chengalpattu: A school holiday has been announced following continued rainfall in the region.
Ranipet: The district administration has also ordered the closure of schools for the day.
The announcements concern schools. Separate confirmation should be sought from the relevant authorities before assuming that colleges or other educational institutions are also closed.
Heavy rainfall continued across Chennai and neighbouring areas overnight and into Wednesday morning. Several localities experienced waterlogging, affecting normal movement and daily activities.
Rainfall observations reported by news organisations indicated that some parts of Chennai recorded substantial precipitation. Authorities have been working to address water accumulation in affected areas.
The situation has prompted precautionary measures to reduce risks to students travelling to and from school.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, has issued weather warnings for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, including warnings of very heavy rainfall for October 21 and 22.
The forecast also indicates that rainfall activity may continue over subsequent days. Residents should monitor official weather bulletins, particularly in areas vulnerable to waterlogging and localised flooding.

As of the latest reports available on October 21, a statewide or district-wide school holiday for Thursday, October 22, has not been confirmed for these five districts.
Parents and students should check announcements from their respective district collectors and school administrations before making plans for the next day. Any extension of the holiday will depend on subsequent weather conditions and official orders.
