Trudeau resigned on Jan 6 amidst growing pressure from his ruling Liberal Party due to his unpopularity. The 53-year-old leader will continue to serve as prime minister until a new leader is elected by the party.
Just hours after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau resigned on Jan 6, Donald Trump reiterated his offer of making Canada the 51st state of the United States.
“If Canada merged with the US, there would be no Tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be TOTALLY SECURE from the threat of the Russian and Chinese Ships that are constantly surrounding them. Together, what a great Nation it would be!!!” said the president-elect.

Trump has earlier made similar statements as to why Canada should merge with the US. However, Canada has never responded to Trump’s proposal which threatened to impose 25% tariffs on imports from Canada if it does not stop the influx of illegal migrants from its southern border of the US.
Taking to his social media platform Truth Social, Trump wrote, “Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State. The United States can no longer suffer the massive Trade Deficits and Subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this, and resigned.”
Trump even mocked Trudeau as “Governor of the Great State of Canada.” The 78-year-old leader has never had good relations with Trudeau even during the first term from 2017-2021.
Ever since Trump met Trudeau after this year’s Nov 5 electoral victory in Mar-a-Lago, after which he has mentioned this several times on his social media posts.
