Police in Coimbatore have detained two students after a 16-year-old Class 11 boy died by suicide, with his family alleging caste-based bullying over his food choices.

Two Class 11 students have been detained in connection with the death of a 16-year-old Dalit student in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. The boy died at his residence in the Peelamedu area on October 21, 2026. His family has alleged that he faced caste-based harassment and bullying related to his food habits.
According to a report by the Press Trust of India (PTI), the two students were produced before the Juvenile Justice Board and subsequently sent to an observation home. Police have also taken action against the school's headmaster and the student's class teacher in connection with the case.

The incident has prompted demands for accountability and a thorough investigation into allegations of caste discrimination at the educational institution.
According to the complaint filed by the student's mother, the boy was allegedly subjected to casteist remarks and repeated harassment by two classmates. The family claims that the bullying was linked to his Scheduled Caste identity and his consumption of beef.
The complaint further alleges that the harassment intensified following a classroom discussion about food habits approximately two months before the incident. The family has also claimed that the student informed school authorities about the alleged treatment but did not receive adequate assistance.
These allegations are being examined by the police and should not be treated as established findings before the investigation is completed.
The school management has suspended headmaster S Arun Kumar and class teacher P Vijayakumar, according to media reports. Both have also faced police action in connection with the case.
Police registered a case involving alleged abetment of suicide under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, along with provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
The investigation is examining the allegations against the students and school staff, including whether the reported harassment contributed to the student's death.
The case has also prompted an inquiry by education department officials. A report by The New Indian Express noted that preliminary accounts gathered during the inquiry differed on certain aspects of the family's allegations.
Officials have indicated that a detailed investigation is necessary to establish what happened and determine whether caste-based discrimination occurred. The reported differences in accounts make it particularly important to distinguish allegations from verified findings.
The student's family and other groups have demanded justice and accountability. The case has renewed concerns about caste-based discrimination, bullying and the mechanisms available to students who report harassment.
The investigation is continuing, and the allegations against the students and school staff remain subject to the findings of the relevant authorities.
