Vijay's first Independence Day speech blends Gen Z outreach with warning to rivals

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay used his first Independence Day address to combine a message aimed at the state's younger generation with a firm political assertion on Tamil Nadu's interests, while warning that forces working against his government would be defeated.

Addressing the Independence Day celebrations at Fort St George in Chennai on Aug 15, Vijay began by greeting Tamils across the world and Gen Z, thanking them for giving him the opportunity to hoist the national flag and deliver his first Independence Day address as Chief Minister.

He paid tribute to freedom fighters and reflected on the meaning of freedom, linking it to social unity and the breaking of barriers based on caste, religion, language and ethnicity.

Vijay said true freedom emerges when people unite after recognising that they have been treated as slaves. He referred to the freedom movement under Mahatma Gandhi while stressing the importance of social equality.

The Chief Minister also connected the idea of freedom with his government's stated campaign against corruption.

He said eliminating bribery and corruption in Tamil Nadu was itself a form of freedom and said his government was working towards that objective. He also claimed that steps had been taken to prevent government revenue from being diverted to private individuals.

Vijay also addressed the relationship between the Tamil Nadu government and the Centre, saying his government would cooperate with the Union government on administrative matters.

At the same time, he made clear that there would be no compromise when it came to the interests of Tamil Nadu.

In a more pointed political message, Vijay said forces working against his government would be defeated and conspiracies against it would be thwarted.

The Chief Minister also spoke about the state's economic ambitions, saying Tamil Nadu would work towards becoming a $1.5 trillion economy by 2036.

He appealed to people not to consider their responsibility complete after voting in an election and sought their continued support for the implementation of government schemes.

Vijay further said his government was committed to issues including social justice, women's safety and tackling drug culture, presenting these as part of its broader governance agenda.

The Independence Day event at Fort St George marked Vijay's first such ceremony as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister. His parents, S.A. Chandrasekhar and Shoba Chandrasekhar, and actor Trisha Krishnan were among those present at the event.

The speech brought together Vijay's appeal to younger voters, his emphasis on social equality and corruption-free governance, and his assertion of Tamil Nadu's interests in its relationship with the Centre.
