Five Specialisation Pathways in the BDes Programme

The Bachelor of Design (Honours) programme follows a multidisciplinary approach, bringing together design, technology, business and public policy. Students are introduced to different areas of design during the first three semesters before choosing a specialisation pathway after Semester 3.

The five pathways listed in the announcement are:

Physical Product Design: Developing physical products with attention to usability, functionality and user needs.

Digital Product Design (UI/UX): Designing digital interfaces and improving user experiences across applications and platforms.

Design Research and Insights: Understanding user behaviour, identifying needs and using research to inform design decisions.

Experience Design: Creating meaningful and engaging experiences across services, products and environments.

Visual Design: Communicating ideas through visual systems, graphics and other forms of visual expression.

The curriculum is intended to give students an opportunity to explore these areas before committing to a particular pathway.

Industry Projects and Internships Form Part of Training

Industry engagement is a key component of the programme, with opportunities for students to work on practical assignments and interact with professionals.

In the first year, the Design Discovery Club connects students with industry mentors in small groups. Second-year students participate in live industry projects, guest lectures, masterclasses and community-based projects that expose them to real-world challenges.

The programme also incorporates BITS Pilani’s Practice School model. According to the institution’s announcement, students undertake an eight-week Practice School-I placement after the second year and a longer, 20-week Practice School-II placement in the fourth year.

The school reported that 138 students from its second-year cohort completed Practice School-I internships this summer, working with 85 organisations across 12 industry sectors. These included aerospace, polar research, financial innovation and consumer industries.

The internships are intended to help students apply classroom learning to professional projects while gaining experience of different workplaces and design challenges.

Entrepreneurship and International Collaborations

Entrepreneurship is another component of the BDes curriculum. The school has introduced a three-credit course called New Venture Creation, delivered by BITS Pilani alumni across its campuses, to help students develop entrepreneurial skills.

In the first edition of the course, six venture concepts developed by BITS Design School students were selected for consideration by investors for potential funding.

Nandita Abraham, Dean of BITS Design School, said design education should prepare students to work across disciplines, understand diverse perspectives and address complex challenges. She also highlighted international collaborations with institutions including RMIT University, Stanford d.school, Arizona State University and Nottingham Trent University as opportunities for students to gain exposure to global design practices.

BITS Design School Scholarships for 2027 Applicants

BITS Design School offers financial assistance to eligible students through different scholarship schemes.

The Chancellor’s Scholarship provides selected high-potential students with a 100% tuition fee waiver, an international exposure opportunity in the second year and an internship arranged by the Chancellor’s Office in the third year.

The school also offers merit-based and merit-cum-means scholarships to eligible students. Applicants should review the official admission guidelines for scholarship eligibility, selection criteria and applicable terms.

Candidates interested in the 2027 intake can access application information through the BITS Design School admissions website.
