Students, university leaders and researchers in Austria have called for reliable long-term funding, warning that budget constraints could affect teaching quality, research, staffing and access to higher education.

Around 6,000 students, university leaders, researchers and teaching staff gathered in Vienna on Oct 13 to oppose potential university budget cuts and demand sustainable funding for higher education in Austria.
The demonstration, organised by the Austrian Students' Union (ÖH), took place along the Vienna University Ring, between the city hall and the main building of the University of Vienna. Participants used a public lecture, a speakers' corner and interactive activities to highlight the consequences of funding shortages.

The protesters warned that insufficient funding could lead to overcrowded lecture halls, unfilled staff positions, fewer resources for research and infrastructure, and greater social inequality in access to education.
"When universities lack funding, we feel it every day: in lecture halls, in research and at work," said Viktoria Kudrna, a member of the ÖH leadership team.
Students seek predictable university funding
The Vienna demonstration follows nationwide protests in May, which drew around 40,000 participants, according to the report. The earlier mobilisation took place amid concerns over the funding arrangements for Austria's public universities.
The government subsequently postponed its budget decision and indicated a nominal increase in funding for the next performance agreement period. However, student representatives remain concerned about whether the proposed increase will keep pace with rising costs.
Selina Wienerroither, another member of the ÖH leadership team, said an increase on paper should not translate into reduced resources in lecture halls. She stressed that university funding must reflect actual costs.
The students' union has called on the federal government to establish a reliable, long-term funding framework that would allow universities to plan their teaching, staffing and research activities more effectively.
Petition against university cuts crosses 60,000 signatures
Alongside street demonstrations, an online petition titled "Save Universities – No Cuts to Universities" continues to gather support. More than 60,000 people had signed it, according to the report.
The campaign reflects concerns among students and university representatives that inadequate funding could have consequences extending beyond individual campuses, affecting research capacity, teaching conditions and the country's higher education system.
The Oct 13 demonstration brought these concerns back into public debate, with participants pressing the government for financial commitments that universities can rely on over the long term.
