The move aims to boost early childhood education under NEP, raising total units to 695 while officials direct schools and local bodies to prepare for nursery admissions and smooth implementation.

The Tripura government is set to expand early childhood education infrastructure by introducing pre-primary units in 450 schools starting from the 2026-27 academic session, according to an official statement.
This move will significantly increase the number of such facilities in government-run schools to 695. The state had only nine pre-primary schools until 2018, after which 236 units were gradually established over the years.

“All district education officers (DEOs) were directed to take immediate steps for introducing pre-primary units in the listed schools and ensure that the process is carried out strictly in accordance with departmental guidelines,” Elementary Education Director Rajib Datta said.
Tripura currently has around 4,800 schools. Officials said the latest expansion aligns with the National Education Policy, which places strong emphasis on early childhood education, and is also aimed at boosting enrollment in government institutions.
As part of the rollout, the education department issued a memorandum on March 19 directing schools to prepare for nursery admissions in the upcoming academic session.
Headmasters, principals, teachers, school management committees, parents, and local bodies have been asked to be informed and sensitized to support the process.
The department has also instructed DEOs to extend necessary assistance to the identified schools to ensure the smooth operationalization of pre-primary units and to submit progress reports on their establishment.
According to the memorandum, any issues related to the opening of these units must be reported by the schools to their respective DEOs.
