His son, Gautam Singhania, Chairman and Managing Director of Raymond Group, announced the news on X with a brief tribute: “RIP. Om Shanti.”

A company spokesperson described him as “a visionary leader, philanthropist and inspiring personality,” noting his distinguished roles as an honorary Air Commodore and former Sheriff of Bombay.

A legacy that shaped indian textiles

Born into the illustrious Singhania business family, Vijaypat Singhania steered Raymond Group through a transformative phase, turning it into a globally recognized brand in suiting fabrics and menswear. His tenure saw aggressive expansion across manufacturing, retail and exports, cementing the company’s dominance in the textile sector.

He led the group for nearly two decades before stepping down in 2000, handing over leadership—and his entire 37% stake—to his son Gautam Singhania, ensuring continuity of the family-led enterprise.

Beyond boardrooms: A life in the skies

Singhania’s influence extended far beyond business. A passionate aviator and adventurer, he earned global acclaim as one of the world’s leading balloonists. As a trained pilot and honorary Air Commodore, he set multiple aviation milestones, including a world record for the highest altitude achieved in a hot air balloon.

His contributions to public life were equally notable, having served as Sheriff of Bombay, reflecting his stature in civic and social spheres.

A complex personal chapter

In later years, his relationship with his son saw legal disputes that drew public attention. However, the differences were eventually resolved, bringing closure to a widely followed family chapter.

Final tributes

In its condolence message, the family remembered him as a “visionary leader whose legacy will continue to inspire generations.” They also invoked a verse from the Bhagavad Gita, praying for eternal peace for the departed soul.

Honored with the Padma Bhushan—India’s third-highest civilian award—Vijaypat Singhania’s legacy endures across industry, aviation and public life, leaving behind a benchmark of ambition, discipline and vision.
