Germany student visa 2026: Indian students need €11,904 in proof of funds

International students planning to pursue higher education in Germany must meet financial and visa requirements before travelling to the country. For 2026, students applying for a study visa can demonstrate their financial resources through a blocked bank account containing at least €11,904 (12-13lakh INR), according to Germany's official government portal.

The amount corresponds to €992 per month and is intended to demonstrate that students can cover their living expenses while studying in Germany.

Students can prove their financial resources through a blocked account, a scholarship or a declaration of commitment. For those using a blocked account, the minimum amount required for 2026 is €11,904.

The financial requirement is separate from any tuition fees or other costs associated with the student's university and programme.

Student visa applications can be submitted online

Germany's Consular Services Portal now allows applicants to submit applications for several national visa categories online. The German Embassy in India lists study purposes and seeking a university place among the categories available through the portal.

Applicants are guided through the online application process and can upload the required documents through the portal. The German Embassy in India has also stated that applicants do not need to use an agent to submit a visa application.

After completing the online process and pre-check, applicants are directed to the relevant next step for their in-person appointment.

Germany student visa fee for Indians

For applicants aged 18 and above, the national visa fee is currently €75, or Rs 8,400, according to the German Embassy in India. Applicants below 18 pay a fee of €37.50, or Rs 4,200. An additional service fee may be charged by the external service provider.

The visa fee is a processing charge and is not refunded if the application is rejected or withdrawn.

What students need before applying

Students applying for a study visa must first have admission to a recognised higher education institution in Germany. They must also demonstrate that they can cover their living expenses and meet any applicable language requirements.

Indian applicants should also check the document requirements applicable to their individual university and visa application before submitting their documents.
