Rajasthan’s education department is encouraging 5,000 government schools to establish science clubs, with activities including experiments, STEM projects and model-making aimed at giving students more practical exposure to science.

The Rajasthan education department has launched an initiative to encourage 5,000 government schools across the state to set up science clubs and promote practical learning in science.
The initiative is intended to move science learning beyond classroom-based instruction by giving students opportunities to conduct experiments, work on projects and apply scientific concepts to practical problems.

The department has asked district education officials to encourage schools to register science clubs and organise activities based on the principle of “learning by doing.”
Science clubs to focus on practical learning
The proposed clubs will involve students in activities related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). These are expected to include practical workshops, live projects, experiments and model-making.
Students may also receive training in activities such as building scientific models and rockets.
The department has specifically encouraged schools that already have science laboratories and offer science as an elective subject to establish clubs. The aim is to make better use of such facilities while giving students more opportunities for practical experimentation.
Rajasthan’s Department of Science and Technology already identifies science clubs as a means of developing scientific interest among school students. Its science popularisation programme includes activities such as astronomy and sky-watching, environmental awareness, studying plants and insects, and workshops involving scientific concepts and technology.
More than 1,100 clubs already registered
More than 1,100 science clubs have already been registered with the Rajasthan Department of Science and Technology.
The education department issued instructions to district education officers on Sep 18 to begin a statewide campaign aimed at increasing the number of registered science clubs and encouraging participating schools to conduct regular activities.
Priority is being given to Swami Vivekananda Model Schools and PM SHRI schools under the initiative.
The department's instructions also call for science activities to be conducted regularly rather than limiting the clubs to one-time events.
The initiative is also intended to provide students with opportunities to develop scientific thinking and prepare for research-oriented activities and science competitions.
Under the plan, experienced science teachers will explain scientific concepts through experiments and other practical activities. Chief district education officers, who also serve as district project coordinators under Samagra Shiksha, have been designated as nodal officers at the district level.
The department has said that students will also be encouraged to identify problems in their local areas and think of possible scientific solutions. The examples cited include issues involving streetlights, roads and commuting.
The emphasis on hands-on learning is consistent with Rajasthan’s existing science-promotion programmes. The state Department of Science and Technology says its science popularisation activities are designed to encourage curiosity, scientific enquiry and creative thinking among students.
The initiative also places emphasis on giving students in rural and remote areas access to practical science learning and modern scientific equipment.
A senior official said the programme would help talented students from such areas prepare for state- and national-level science competitions.
The initiative therefore combines school-level science activities with opportunities for students to develop problem-solving skills, conduct experiments and participate in competitive science activities.
With the education department asking districts to expand registration and regular activities, the proposed network of 5,000 science clubs is expected to increase the reach of practical STEM learning across Rajasthan’s government schools.
