NMC withdraws MBBS approval for Shri Mata Vaishno Devi medical college

The National Medical Commission’s Medical Assessment and Rating Board on Jan 6 withdrew permission granted to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence in Kakryal, Reasi, Jammu and Kashmir.

The approval was revoked after a surprise inspection found serious deficiencies at the institute for the 2025–26 MBBS program with 50 seats.

According to officials, the decision took immediate effect following the inspection, which identified major lapses in meeting the minimum regulatory requirements for running an undergraduate medical course.

The shortcomings were found to be in violation of the conditions under which approval had been granted.

The institute had applied to establish a new MBBS program under public notices issued by the National Medical Commission on Dec 5 and Dec 19, 2024.

After examining the proposal, the Medical Assessment and Rating Board processed the application and issued a Letter of Permission on Sept 8, 2025, allowing admission of 50 MBBS students for the 2025–26 session.

The approval was subject to several conditions, including the maintenance of minimum essential standards related to infrastructure, faculty, and hospital facilities, acceptance of surprise inspections by regulatory authorities, accurate disclosure of institutional information, and timely rectification of any deficiencies.

The board had also stated that the permission could be withdrawn in cases of misrepresentation, non-compliance, or failure to meet prescribed norms.

Following the withdrawal of the Letter of Permission, the medical college will not be allowed to admit students to the MBBS course for the 2025–26 academic year.

The move is expected to impact prospective medical students and reflects the commission’s ongoing emphasis on enforcing quality standards and accountability in medical education nationwide.
