Kerala allows traditional attire in schools on festival days

Students in Kerala will now be allowed to wear traditional attire instead of school uniforms during festivals, as per a new directive from the state’s Education Department.

The order applies to celebrations such as Onam, Christmas, and Ramadan and is intended to promote cultural expression and inclusivity within the school environment.

The move, officials say, encourages students to celebrate their heritage and strengthens the sense of unity and respect for diversity among children.

In a separate development, the state recently introduced a child safety initiative titled ‘Surakshamitram.’

Announced by Education Minister V Sivankutty on Aug 10, the program allows students to file complaints anonymously through special help boxes installed in their schools.

"'Surakshamitram' is a new initiative launched by Kerala's General Education Department to ensure children's safety in the state. It allows students to submit complaints anonymously via a help box installed in their schools. The govt is committed to acting against atrocities against children," the minister wrote in a post on X.

The Education Department is also promoting student well-being through physical activity. In July, a Zumba-based fitness program was rolled out across schools as part of a broader anti-drug campaign.

Held weekly, the sessions are aimed at helping students manage stress while improving both physical and mental health.

The initiative has received mixed responses. While some groups raised concerns about the interaction between boys and girls during dance sessions, others have welcomed the step.

"I am happy to say that the Kerala government has taken initiative to promote Zumba in schools. It is a great initiative because nowadays children are addicted to many things that ruin their mindset. Zumba can help them relax their mind. It will help the children to increase their confidence. As it is a calorie-burning workout, it is a good move for weight management also,” said Roma Mansoor, a certified International Zumba Fitness instructor.
