The move aims to attract top research talent by offering financial stability, enabling scholars to focus on their work, with a stipend surpassing University Grants Commission (UGC) and DST standards.
The monthly stipend for the PhD fellowship at the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology Delhi (IIIT-Delhi) has increased significantly, from ₹37,000 to ₹60,000, the highest amount in India.
By offering financial stability and attracting outstanding research talent, this strategy hopes to free up scholars to concentrate fully on their work.
The honorarium exceeds the requirements stipulated by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the University Grants Commission (UGC).
“The increased PhD fellowship aligns with the vision of advancing research excellence by attracting the best students in the country, fostering high-quality, impactful research, and empowering our students to make meaningful contributions to global scientific progress,” said Professor Ranjan Bose, Director of IIIT-Delhi.
Beyond the stipend, IIIT-Delhi offers comprehensive financial support to its scholars. This includes ₹1.5 lakh for international lab visits, providing global research exposure and collaboration opportunities with leading researchers.
Scholars also receive a Professional Development Allowance (PDA) of ₹2.5 lakh to present their research at prestigious conferences and workshops.
Additionally, there is a research contingency grant of ₹20,000 per year for five years to cover essential research costs and a one-time laptop grant of ₹50,000 to equip scholars with necessary tools.
Scholars benefit from world-class research infrastructure, including access to high-performance computing resources, state-of-the-art labs, and advanced research tools.
Opportunities for interdisciplinary and industry-driven research are available in areas such as AI, cybersecurity, and computational biology, supported by faculty and industry partnerships.
Furthermore, IIIT-Delhi offers specific faculty mentorship, which helps scholars define their research careers.
Dr Sumit Darak, Dean of Academic Affairs, emphasized the initiative's larger impact.
“The revised PhD stipend and subsidized hostel fee are significant steps toward bridging the gap between academia and industry pay scales, ensuring IIIT-Delhi attracts top talent. Support for conference travel and international visits will further strengthen collaborations with renowned labs worldwide,” Darak said.
Another well-known feature of IIIT-Delhi is its stringent PhD evaluation procedure, which guarantees that researchers create excellent, significant work.
This dedication to quality not only improves the learning environment but also increases graduates' employability.
