ICAI to introduce AI, data analytics in CA curriculum

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) is preparing to revamp the Chartered Accountancy curriculum by introducing subjects related to artificial intelligence, data analytics, and other emerging professional areas as the accounting sector undergoes rapid technological transformation.

The move is aimed at aligning CA education with changing industry demands and equipping students with skills increasingly required in finance, auditing, and compliance roles.

ICAI currently has more than five lakh members nationwide, while lakhs of students are enrolled in the CA program.

ICAI President Prasanna Kumar D said technology has become deeply integrated into the accounting profession, making knowledge of AI and data analytics important for chartered accountants.

According to him, AI is no longer confined to technical disciplines like engineering, and professionals in both employment and private practice will need to work with AI-driven tools and data-based systems.

At present, topics such as artificial intelligence, ESG, sustainability, data analytics, and forensic auditing are not formally part of the CA syllabus. The institute now plans to include these subjects under a revised educational framework.

To review the existing structure, ICAI has formed the Committee for Review of Education and Training (CRET).

The panel has been tasked with evaluating the current syllabus, practical training model, communication and soft skills development, and examination patterns.

The committee is expected to recommend ways to incorporate recent technological and professional developments into CA education.

The review comes amid growing use of AI-powered systems, data-led auditing practices, ESG reporting requirements, and non-financial disclosures across industries.

ICAI had earlier implemented the New Scheme of Education and Training in 2023. The newly constituted CRET committee will now assess what additional changes are needed to keep the program aligned with evolving industry expectations.

According to ICAI officials, the committee is likely to complete its review by December. Its recommendations will subsequently be placed in the public domain for feedback and consultation before implementation.

The proposed revisions are expected to modernize CA education and improve the professional preparedness of future chartered accountants in an increasingly technology-driven financial ecosystem.
