DoE directs Delhi schools to adopt heat safety measures amid rising temperatures

The Directorate of Education (NCT of Delhi) on April 21 issued detailed guidelines for schools following a yellow alert by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) of rising temperatures and possible heatwave conditions in the capital.

The directions apply to all government-aided and private unaided recognized schools, which have been asked to strictly implement the measures.

Schools have been instructed to limit outdoor assemblies or shift them to shaded or indoor spaces with reduced duration, while avoiding open-air classes altogether.

They must also introduce a “Water Bell” system, ringing at intervals of 45 to 60 minutes to remind students to stay hydrated.

Students are required to carry sufficient drinking water, and schools must provide safe and cool water at easily accessible points.

Institutions have also been directed to display IEC material issued by the Health Department at prominent locations such as notice boards, corridors, and classrooms.

In addition, short awareness sessions should be conducted to educate students on heat safety, symptoms of heat-related illnesses, and the need for timely first aid and medical attention.

The guidelines further recommend pairing students under a buddy system to monitor each other’s well-being during school hours.

Outdoor physical activities should be avoided, and teachers must regularly share IMD advisories with parents through class-specific WhatsApp groups.

Schools are also expected to circulate daily heatwave updates during assemblies and via notice boards.

Parents have been advised to send children in light, breathable cotton clothing and maintain proper personal hygiene. Each school has been directed to appoint nodal officers to oversee implementation of key measures.
