‘The Enchanting 8’ to Bring Northeast India’s Rich Heritage to a Wider Audience

A new documentary series, The Enchanting 8: A Culinary Journey Through the Northeast, will showcase the diverse cuisines, communities and cultural traditions of Northeast India to a wider national audience, Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region and Communications Jyotiraditya M. Scindia said on Tuesday.

Scindia launched the trailer of the documentary series at an event organised by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) in New Delhi. Minister of State for MDoNER Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, senior ministry officials and members of the production team attended the event.

The series takes viewers across all eight Northeastern states through a food-led exploration of their communities, people and traditions.

It highlights culinary practices rooted in locally available resources and documents indigenous knowledge associated with food preparation and traditional practices.

Supported by MDoNER and the North Eastern Council (NEC), the series has been implemented through the North Eastern Region Community Resource Management Society (NERCRMS). It has been produced by Urban Media Productions in association with Filandering Forker Media.

The documentary forms part of MDoNER’s cultural outreach initiatives aimed at bringing the Northeast closer to audiences across the country through authentic stories and experiences from the region.

Rather than portraying the Northeast as having a single culinary identity, the series explores the distinct food traditions shaped by different communities and geographical settings across the eight states.

As part of the production, the team interacted with local communities and food producers, following native ingredients from their sources to kitchens and eventually to the dining table.

These interactions also helped document the stories, traditions and people associated with the region’s food practices.

The trailer highlights the Northeastern states through their cuisine and the people who prepare, preserve and share it. Local voices form an important part of the narrative, while the series explores the ingredients, indigenous knowledge and everyday practices that have shaped the region’s culinary heritage.

While food serves as the central theme, the documentary also explores the arts, culture and landscapes of Northeast India, placing its culinary traditions within the broader social and cultural context in which they have developed.

Through its food-led storytelling, The Enchanting 8 seeks to present the cultural diversity of the Northeast and introduce audiences across India to the region’s distinct culinary traditions and community narratives.
