PMAY-U Delivers Housing Boost as Over 1 Crore Houses Reach Beneficiaries

As many as 1.25 crore houses have been sanctioned under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Urban (PMAY-U) and PMAY-U 2.0, with more than 1 crore pucca houses completed and handed over to beneficiaries across the country as of August 9, 2026, according to a government factsheet issued on Wednesday.
The figures cover the urban housing schemes aimed at improving access to affordable homes for eligible households across cities and towns.

PMAY-U expands housing access for women and vulnerable groups
According to the factsheet, around 8 lakh urban houses were completed under earlier schemes between 2005 and 2014. PMAY-U was launched in 2015.
Women account for a significant share of ownership under the current housing programme. Of the 1.25 crore houses sanctioned under PMAY-U and PMAY-U 2.0, around 1 crore have been allotted to women either in the name of the female head of the household or through joint ownership.
The scheme mandates ownership or co-ownership of houses in the name of women beneficiaries. The government said the provision is intended to strengthen women's financial security and their role in household decision-making.
The housing mission also focuses on SCs, STs, OBCs, minorities, senior citizens, persons with disabilities and transgender persons. PMAY-U 2.0 continues this focus through targeted assistance for different beneficiary groups.
PMAY-U 2.0 targets 1 crore more urban families
PMAY-U 2.0 is the next phase of the urban affordable housing programme and is being implemented from 2024 to 2029. As of August 9, 2026, around 18.38 lakh houses had been sanctioned under the scheme.
The programme aims to provide financial assistance to 1 crore additional urban poor and middle-class families. Eligible families can receive financial assistance of up to Rs 2.50 lakh per unit towards construction or purchase of affordable housing in urban areas.
PMAY-U 2.0 also includes support for affordable rental housing for eligible beneficiaries, catering to different housing requirements in urban areas.
Technology-based systems have also been incorporated into the implementation process. Geo-tagging and real-time dashboards are being used for monitoring and transparency.
The Unified Web Portal of PMAY-U 2.0 provides a single platform for beneficiaries, Urban Local Bodies, States and Union Territories and other implementing agencies. The portal allows eligible beneficiaries to apply for assistance and track applications, while geo-tagging helps monitor houses at different stages of construction.
The government said the digital system also supports fund disbursement and monitoring, with the objective of improving transparency, accountability and implementation efficiency.
