The initiative will be implemented through a new Centre of Excellence (CoE) that will be established on the IIT Guwahati campus. The institute has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tata Electronics to develop the center, which will focus on semiconductor packaging education, skill development and research.

According to an official statement from IIT Guwahati, the collaboration will extend specialized training opportunities beyond the institute. Students from engineering colleges, polytechnics and other educational institutions across Assam and the Northeast will also be able to participate in the programs.

IIT Guwahati semiconductor courses: What will the programs cover?

IIT Guwahati will take the lead in designing and delivering the proposed educational programs, while Tata Electronics will work jointly with the institute to develop the course content and specialized training modules.

The diploma-level training and BTech-level engineering programs will combine classroom instruction with practical, hands-on learning in semiconductor ATMP.

The subject covers several important stages of semiconductor manufacturing, including the assembly and packaging of semiconductor chips, their testing and marking.

Through this academic-industry partnership, students will receive exposure to technical processes and industry practices associated with semiconductor packaging. The practical component is intended to help participants develop skills relevant to the operational and technical requirements of semiconductor companies.

The collaboration will also involve identifying engineering colleges, universities and polytechnics that can become part of the initiative. Students from selected institutions will receive opportunities to access hands-on training, expanding the reach of semiconductor education across the region.

Faculty development will form another component of the partnership. Teachers from participating institutions will undergo training to improve their understanding of semiconductor technologies and strengthen their ability to deliver related courses at their respective colleges and universities.

IIT Guwahati and Tata Electronics partnership: Training and research opportunities

Apart from academic programs and faculty training, the partnership will provide students with opportunities to undertake training at Tata Electronics. This arrangement will allow participants to gain practical exposure to semiconductor industry operations and related technologies.

Undergraduate and postgraduate students will also be able to participate in joint research projects. These projects will focus on semiconductor packaging, assembly, testing and other associated technologies, creating opportunities for students to engage in research alongside industry professionals.

The proposed Centre of Excellence will function as the primary hub for academic, training and research activities under the collaboration. It will bring together IIT Guwahati's academic and research capabilities and Tata Electronics' industry expertise to support specialized semiconductor education.

The center is also intended to strengthen the connection between technical education and the changing skill requirements of the semiconductor industry. By extending training opportunities to institutions outside the IIT campus, the initiative aims to make specialized technical learning accessible to a wider student population.

The partnership comes as India continues to work toward developing a skilled workforce to support its semiconductor industry. The availability of trained professionals is an important requirement for expanding semiconductor manufacturing, packaging and related operations in the country.

By involving engineering colleges, universities and polytechnics across Assam and the Northeast, IIT Guwahati and Tata Electronics also aim to develop a broader regional talent pipeline. The initiative is expected to support semiconductor-related education, research and skill development while preparing students for emerging opportunities in the sector.
