Six-month residential course equips military officers with skills in finance, strategy, analytics and management for life beyond service.

Sixty-two officers of the Indian Armed Forces have joined the 20th batch of the Armed Forces Programme (AFP) at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, beginning a six-month journey to prepare for careers beyond the uniform.
The residential programme, running from October to March, is designed to help officers translate years of military leadership and operational experience into skills relevant to the corporate world.

For officers accustomed to command, strategic planning and managing people and resources, the transition brings a different set of challenges. Classrooms at IIM Ahmedabad will now take them through finance, marketing, business analytics, economics, strategy and entrepreneurship.
The programme is built on the premise that the skills developed during military service can offer significant value in the corporate sector.
The officers bring experience in leadership, human-resource management, infrastructure, project management, organisational behaviour and strategic decision-making. The AFP aims to complement that experience with an understanding of how modern businesses operate, compete and grow.
For many participants, the programme represents an important step towards a second professional innings after years of service.
The curriculum covers corporate finance, marketing, statistics, business analytics, economics, entrepreneurship, business law, supply chain management and information systems.
It also includes accounting, human-resource management, organisational behaviour, strategy, operations, decision sciences, financial decision-making and healthcare management.
The combination is intended to help officers understand the financial, operational and strategic dimensions of business while building on the leadership and management capabilities developed during their military careers.
The programme follows IIM Ahmedabad's case-based learning approach, exposing participants to real-world business situations and decision-making challenges across industries.
Classroom learning is supplemented by industry visits, expert lectures and interactions with corporate professionals. These engagements are aimed at giving officers a closer understanding of corporate workplaces and the wider business environment.
The transition from military service to civilian employment can require more than technical knowledge. It also involves understanding a different organisational culture, new professional expectations and the language of business.
The AFP seeks to bridge that gap.
For the 62 officers, the programme marks the beginning of a new chapter. The uniform may eventually give way to corporate roles, but the leadership, discipline and responsibility built over years of military service remain central to the second careers they are now preparing to pursue.
