Laurent Simons completed his PhD in quantum physics at 15 and is now turning to medical science and AI with a long-standing ambition to advance human health and longevity.

At 16, Belgian prodigy Laurent Simons is already working towards his second doctorate after completing a PhD in quantum physics at just 15.
Simons defended his doctoral thesis at the University of Antwerp on November 17, 2025. His research focused on Bose polarons in superfluids and supersolids, an advanced field involving ultracold quantum systems.

Now, his academic journey has taken a striking turn from fundamental physics to medicine. Simons is pursuing a second doctorate in medical science, with research interests spanning artificial intelligence, whole-body imaging and the links between physics and medicine.
Simons' academic acceleration began in early childhood. He entered primary school at four and progressed through his education at an exceptional pace.
At around eight, he joined Eindhoven University of Technology to study electrical engineering. He later moved to the University of Antwerp, where he completed a bachelor's degree in physics at 11 and a master's degree in quantum physics at 12.
His early research experience also took him to Germany's Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics.
By the time he defended his PhD, Simons had already established an academic record that would be extraordinary at any age.
What makes Simons' latest academic move particularly striking is the continuity in his ambition.
As a child, he spoke about wanting to develop artificial organs and help people suffering from heart conditions, inspired in part by his grandparents' health problems.
That early interest in medicine now appears to be shaping his research direction. His move into medical science and AI brings together disciplines that might seem distant but could have a common purpose — using advanced science and technology to better understand the human body and improve healthcare.
At 16, Simons' academic journey is already extraordinary. But his shift from quantum physics towards medicine suggests that his ultimate ambition extends beyond collecting degrees: he wants to explore how science can help people live healthier and potentially longer lives.
