A judicial commission of inquiry, led by former Madras High Court Judge B Gokuldas, has been established to investigate the incident, with a report due within three months.
According to the Railway Board's preliminary report, the goods train, operating under a defective automatic signaling system was above speed limits when it collided with the Kanchanjunga Express.
The train was travelling from Agartala to Sealdah when the accident occurred around 9 am. As a result, long-distance train services have been temporarily stopped. It has been raining heavily since morning in Siliguri, impacting the rescue operation.
