The US Midterm Elections 2026 have delivered a major political setback for President Donald Trump, with Democrats reclaiming control of the Senate and being projected to take the House of Representatives. The results could significantly reshape the balance of power in Washington, limiting Trump's legislative agenda during the final two years of his presidency.

Democrats flipped six Republican-held Senate seats, securing a majority in the chamber. They also made substantial gains in the House, flipping at least eight Republican seats and moving closer to securing control. The Associated Press independently confirmed the Democratic Senate victory, although its earlier reporting said the House outcome was still too close to call.

Economic dissatisfaction emerged as one of the biggest factors influencing the election. Rising food prices, housing expenses, healthcare costs and fuel prices have placed financial pressure on American households. According to voter-poll findings reported by the Associated Press, approximately 80% of voters said inflation had caused moderate or severe financial hardship. Dissatisfaction with the country's direction and concerns about government accountability also featured prominently.

The US conflict with Iran added another dimension to the campaign. Concerns about rising energy prices and the economic consequences of the conflict became important issues for voters, creating further challenges for Trump's administration.

Donald Trump Responds to Republican Losses

Reacting to the results, Trump argued that Republicans would have secured a landslide victory had he been personally on the ballot. He also indicated that he could use his presidential veto power against legislation introduced by Democrats. However, the results do not affect Trump's position as president. His current term continues until January 2029.

Democratic control of Congress could bring greater scrutiny of Trump's administration through congressional investigations, hearings and oversight proceedings. The Senate could also make presidential judicial and senior government appointments more difficult. However, Trump's veto powers mean Democrats cannot automatically implement their legislative priorities. Major legislation could face political deadlock, particularly over government spending and economic policies.

The election results also matter for India-US relations. Immigration policies, H-1B visas, international student regulations, trade tariffs, technology cooperation and defense ties are areas worth watching. However, a change in congressional control does not automatically indicate a shift in Washington's policy toward New Delhi. The new Congress is scheduled to begin its term on January 3, 2027. Its relationship with the White House will be crucial in determining the direction of American domestic and foreign policy over the next two years.
